Yuba City throttles River Valley 11-0 in Mayor’s Series-tcc opener

Blake Craft, Maggie Penning hurl back-to-back no hitters for YC

The Yuba City High baseball team maintained its dominance over crosstown rival River Valley in the 12th annual Mayor’s Series and kicked off Tri-county Conference play with an emphatic 11-0 victory in five innings on Monday afternoon.

Yuba City broke open the game with six runs in the second inning and proceeded to shorten the game with a five-run fourth inning.

The Honkers’ Blake Baca was perfect at the plate, going 4 for 4 with a pair of runs scored and a RBI.

Matt Clayton led the team with three RBI in a 2-for-4 performanc­e with a triple.

Logan Meyers was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and had two RBI, while Marc Snyder was 2 for 3 with a RBI, and Brad Madison finished 1 for 3 with two RBI.

While the offense was raking in the runs, the Honkers’ Anthony Piegaro handed River Valley its fourth-straight shutout with a seven-strikeout, one-walk performanc­e through five innings.

River Valley coach Michael Mink said his team “played hard and is still trying to find its lineup.”

The Falcons’ Colby Chipchase and Justin Rodriguez each had hits in the loss.

Yuba City (3-2, 1-0) and River Valley (1-4, 0-1) are scheduled to continue the series on Wednesday at Yuba City High.

In the junior varsity game, Yuba City’s Richard “Tuff” Nokes no-hit River Valley in a 5-0 win.

Nokes pitched seven innings and had six strikeouts.

Andy Menendez was 2 for 4 and Gehrig Larrigan was 1 for 3 with a triple.

Marysville 8, Mesa Verde 7 In Mesa Verde – John Flores singled in Pryce Bramer in the top of the seventh inning and the Indians opened Golden Empire League play with a win in a back-and-forth game.

Flores put together a 3-for-4 performanc­e at the plate with three RBI, while Bramer went 1 for 2 with a RBI.

Errors cost Morgun Goss a chance at the win, who went five innings with one earned run, five hits and collected seven strikeouts.

Canyon Williams earned the win by setting down the final five batters in a row for Marysville (4-0, 1-0), who host Mesa Verde on Wednesday. Dixon 15, Lindhurst 1, 5 innings In Olivehurst – Andrew Rodriguez had the only hit for the Blazers, who opened GEL play on the wrong side of a lopsided scoreboard.

Casey Acosta scored the sole run for the Blazers’ (0-3, 0-1), who travel to Dixon on Wednesday.

SOFTBALL Yuba City 6, Marysville 0 In Marysville – One walk was all the Indians could muster against Yuba City’s Blake Craft, who tossed a no-no immediatel­y after Maggie Penning completed her own no-hitter in the junior varsity game.

Craft collected 13 strikeouts through seven innings and added a single to help her cause.

Tayler Birkholz went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBI, while Liz Rudstrom and Alyssa Richebache­r each had singles for Yuba City (6-2), which open TCC play at Woodland on March 20.

Marysville (3-2) did not report any statistics.

Penning’s no-hitter came in an 11-0 Yuba City rout of the Indians in the junior varsity game.

The freshman hurler went seven innings with nine strikeouts and allowed one walk. She also added a single and double to help her cause.

Sydnee Chappell was 3 for 4 with a home run and a pair of singles, Bethany Baca was 2 for 3 with a single and double, and Monica Mitchell finished 1 for 2 with a home run for the Honkers (8-0).

Marysville did not report any statistics.

BOYS GOLF Sutter hosts, wins BVL Kickoff In Linda – Sutter took home the top spot in the fourteam Butte View League Kickoff and served as host to the nine-hole tournament at Peach Tree Golf and Country Club.

Tommy Alexander shot a 51 to help lead the Huskies to a first-place finish (281).

Orland placed in second (286), while Wheatland (324) and Gridley (326) rounded out the field.

RV takes 9th at Rocklin Invitation­al In Rocklin – Though the Falcons finished ninth in a field of 15, the performanc­e of Trey Davis stood out, as the senior medalled for first place by shooting a 72.

Andrew Davidson shot an 84 and Riley Bell shot an 87 for the Falcons, who shot 424 overall.

BOYS TENNIS Yuba City 8, Rio Linda 0 In Yuba City – The Honkers shut out the visiting Knights to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Winners in singles action were Andrew Williams (6-4, 6-1), Brandon Lima (4-6, 6-3, 11-9), Arjun Takhar (7-5,

6-4), Samuel Oaks (6-2, 6-0), Diego Murillo (6-0, 6-1) and Nathan Hanbols (6-2, 6-3).

The doubles pair of Himanshu Kairan and Gabriel Tom picked up an 8-6, 6-1 victory, while Dylan Buck and Jevonn Mann teamed up for a 6-1, 6-1 win. Yuba City returns to action at River City on Thursday.

River Valley 9, Woodland 0 In Yuba City – The Falcons shutout Woodland to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Winners in singles action were Sameer Gupta (6-0, 6-1), Thomas Tomthat (6-1, 6-2), Christian Ramirez (6-0, 6-1), Zane Millang (6-0, 6-1), Ethan Thiara (6-1, 6-0) and Eddie Perez (6-1, 6-2).

The doubles pair of Harsimar Kullar and Victor Camacho (6-0, 6-0), Emmanuel Ramirez and Manjet Singh (62, 6-2), and Jonathon Goode and Anthony Alvarez (6-1, 6-1) each picked up wins. River Valley is scheduled to host Rio Linda today. COLLEGE Baseball Sierra 6, Yuba 0 In Linda – For the second time in less than a month, the 49ers were unable to defend their home field against the Wolverines.

Bear Belding went 2 for 3 and Andrew Schnitzius finished 2 for 4 in the losing effort.

Yuba (9-10) travels to Laney College today to begin a three-game series which concludes on Saturday.

TRACK & FIELD Honkers compete in

Randy Sturgeon Invitation­al Granite Bay – For the Honkers’ varsity boys, Keron Blackwell recorded a personal best of 6 foot 4 inches to take second place in the high jump. Diego Early finished 10th in the 400 meters (53.69 seconds). Major Niccum was 12th in the 300m hurdles (45.62 sec). Matt Butar was 17th in the triple jump (36’4”).

For the Honkers’ varsity girls, Hannah Owens was 10th in the 300m hurdles (53.83 sec).

Tahtae’ana Delisle finished 12th (79’1.5”).

The Honker’s most successful division was the freshmen-sophomore team, which included a third-place finish from the 4x400m team of Emiliano Murillo, Mason Niccum, Javon Jackson, and Erik Palmquist (3:45.89 minutes). Palmquist was also fourth in the 200m (24.29 sec).

Liam Dunham (50.04 sec), Xander Stottman (50.73), Armando Escobar (51.13) placed 11th , 12th, and 16th in the 300m hurdles, respective­ly.

Jovani Duenas was 12th in the long jump (16’6.5”). Atticus Driver finished 15th (2:17.04 min) and Austin Holtz finished 17th (2:17.56 min) in the 800m. Michael Pompey was 15th in the shot put (34’6.5”), Isaac Price was 17th in the 400m (58.44 sec), and Justin Negrete was 19th in the 3200m (11:21.34 minutes).

For the Honker frosh-soph girls, the 4x400m relay team of Yasmeen Lopez, Maddie Saalsaa, Emma Nelson, and Alina Quintana recorded a time of 4:37.63 minutes for fifth place. Emma Nelson was 7th in the 200m (28.29 sec). in the discus
