The candidate filing period for the June primary election officially closed on Wednesday. The general deadline was last Friday, but extensions are granted for any county race in which an incumbent didn’t file for reelection.

A total of eight positions in Yuba-sutter – four positions on each side of the Feather River – will be contested with multiple candidates in the running, while 16 positions have already been decided.

On the Yuba County side, there will be contests for the assessor, sheriff/coroner and two supervisor positions. The district attorney position is the only race that does not have an incumbent running and has already been decided – Clint Curry is running unopposed and will be taking over from current District Attorney Patrick Mcgrath.

Other positions already decided – in which incumbents are unchallenged – include the auditor-controller, county clerk, superintendent of schools, treasurer-tax collector, two superior court judges and the south division director for the Yuba County Water Agency.

On the Sutter County side, there are multiple candidates running for positions of superintendent of schools, supervisor District 3, district attorney and sheriff.

Other positions already decided in Sutter County include supervisor District 2, assessor, auditor-controller, county clerk, treasurer-tax collector, and three superior court judges. All of the positions will be retained by incumbents.

Donna Hillegass, deputy county clerk and recorder for Yuba County, said there are a few dates residents should be aware of moving forward.

“Soon after April 26, the county voter information guides will be mailed out. Then, around May 7, vote-by-mail ballots will go out,” Hillegass said.

Sutter County Clerk Donna Johnston said residents hoping to cast their vote at a polling site will have until May 21 to register. For those expecting to be out of town during the elections, she said they can also vote early by going into their county election office.

“May 7 is the first day ballots can go out, so if someone will be traveling around election time or want to vote early, they can do so by coming into our offices and we will have them fill out a vote-by-mail ballot,” Johnston said.

The 2018 primary election will be June 5.
