Colusa baseball cruises to a pair of easy wins

Local track & field athletes shine at Crabtree Classic, TCC meet

While nearly every baseball and softball team saw their games rained out over the last three days, Colusa High’s baseball team was able to squeeze in a pair of games on Friday and came away with two convincing victories.

Playing at the Hamilton City Tournament, the Redhawks opened the day with a 16-4 win over countyriva­l Pierce before cruising to an easy 18-0 win over Etna in their second game.

Blake Steidlmaye­r finished 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIS, and Christian Lyss went 2 for 3 with three RBIS as well in the win over Pierce.

Against Etna, Ethan Rakela led the way at the plate by going a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBIS, while Ray Frias went 4 for 5 with two RBIS. Steidlmaye­r continued to swing a hot bat as well, finishing the game 3 for 3 with a walk.

The highlights weren’t just limited to the offense, however, as Ben Davies and Cole Simmons combined to throw a no-hitter on the mound. Davies struck out six and walked one over the first thee innings, and Simmons fanned two over the final two frames to complete the no-no.

Colusa (4-2) continues the round-robin tournament today at 1:30 p.m. against host Hamilton. Locals post top marks at Crabtree Classic In Wheatland – Local athletes turned in strong performanc­es at the 15-team Roy Crabtree Pirate Classic on Friday.

Leading the way was Sutter junior Mia Ashby, who swept all three girls distance events by taking first in the 800 (2 minutes, 32 seconds), the 1,600 (5:51) and the 3,200 (12:13).

Teammate Savannah Bailey was a double-winner by placing first in the 200 (27.3) and 400 (1:01.6), and she also took third in the 800 (2:38).

Wheatland seniors Erica Grotegeer and CJ Duncan both won two events as well.

Grotegeer, who finished third in the state in the discus as a junior last year, finished first in the discus with a throw of 145-8, and she also won the shot put with a mark of 38-2. Duncan finished first in the 800 with a time of 2:07, and was also first in the 1,600 by clocking in at 4:53.

Bailey Rockholt won the boys 3,200 (10:43), and was second in both the 800 (2:11) and the 1,600 (4:55), and Jonathan Zubia took second in the 400 (54.35) and third in the 800 (2:14) for Sutter.

Wheatland’s Michael Sappa placed second in the boys shot put (43-0), and taking third for the Pirates were Xavier Sanchez in the 100 (12.17), Travis Mccane in the 400 (55.43) and Gage Morris in the 3,200 (11:32.93).

Wheatland’s Abby Meder also finished second to Grotegeer in the girls discus (103-5) and Sutter’s Kayla Page was third in the 400 (1:06.4).

In junior varsity boys competitio­n, Chris Soderlund placed first in the discus (87-0) and was second in the shot put (38-4), and Tariq Parker was first in the long jump (18-5) for Wheatland. Tanner Mcadams took second in the 400 (57.39) and Kona Pina placed third in the long jump (16-5).

For Sutter, Braedyn Hick won the 3,200 (11:01) and was third in the 1,600 (5:19), and Daiven Atwal won the triple jump (37-0).

Bryce Harper took second in both the 800 (2:19) and the 1,600 (5:15), and was a member of the first-place place 4x400 team with Hick, Isaiah Martinez and Jadon Stanley that timed in at 4:17.

Junior varsity girls saw Sutter’s Sierra Hamilton win the discus (84-10) and take second in the shot put (24-6), and Wheatland’s Mckayla Thompson finish first in the 3,200 (15:03).

Sutter’s Lilli Patrick took second in both the 400 (1:07) and the 800 (2:47), and was member of the first-place 4x400 team with Kenzi Johnson, Perla Martinez and Mateya Gualco that recorded a time of 5:02.

Sara Ashby was seconnd in the 3,200 (15:12) and Perla Martinez was third (15:13) to round out the leaders for the Huskies.

RV boys win first TCC meet In West Sacramento – River Valley’s varsity boys track and field team finished first out of six teams at the first Tri-county Conference meet of the season on Wednesday at River City High.

The Falcons ended the day with 139 points to finish ahead of Inderkum’s total of 129. Yuba City was third with 91 points.

John Kroeger led the way for River Valley by winning three events – the long jump (20-2), the triple jump (41-7) and the 200 (23.62).

Kevonni Gibbs won the 100 (11.44) and was second in the 200 (23.76), and he also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x100 relay team with David Kyambadde, Elias Saracco and Rex Baker. They finished first with a time of 44.18.

Abhishek Singh took second in the long jump (19-8), and third in both the triple jump (38-2) and the 300 hurdles (47.95), Kyambadde placed second in the high jump (5-8), Emmanuel Castrellon was second in the pole vault (11-6) and Saracco took third in the long lump (19-1½).

The Falcons’ 4x400 relay team of Baker, Aidan Jukes, David Castrejon and Kroeger also placed third in a time of 3:52.53.

Yuba City’s boys team was paced by Diego Early, who took first in the 300 hurdles (45.66), second in the 400 (53.39) and third in the high jump (5-8). Major Niccum won the 110 hurdles (19.59) and placed second in the 300 hurdles (46.78), and Keron Blackwell won the high jump (6-0) and finished second in the 110 hurdles (19.81).

Atticus Driver also placed third in both the 1,600 (4:59) and the 3,200 (10:56.41), and the Honkers’ 4x400 relay team of Isaac Cuadras, Jevon Jackson, Erik Palmquist and Tilian Vrazel finished second with a time of 3:49.27.

River Valley’s varsity girls also had a strong day, taking second overall with 152 points, just behind Inderkum’s total of 166. Yuba City was third with 95 points.

Sarah Conine took first in the 800 (2:37.90) and was second in the 1,600 (5:51.16), Alaira Smith placed first in the triple jump (30-0½) and Abigail Titus finished first in the discus (906) for the Falcons.

Just off of a stellar basketball season, Lisa Po’oi, Madeline Morrison and Leaundra Walker-brown claimed some top finishes as well. Po’oi took first in the shot put (29-11) and second in the discus (88-0), Morrison was first in the 100 hurdles (18.53), and Walker-brown was second in the 100 (13.65) and ran a leg on the second-place 4x100 relay team with Genevieve Hagen, Paige Dahlen and Nadia Love that clocked in at 52.58.

Love also took second in the long jump (13-8½) and third in the 100 hurdles (18.91), Grecia Rodriguez placed second in the 100 hurdles (18.83), Hagen was third in the long jump (13-0), Thya Sengwong finished third in the triple jump (26-1) and Stacia Sines was third in pole vault (5-6).

The 4x400 relay team of Samantha Taylor, Ramirez Villa, Rodriguez and Conine also placed third with a time of 5:06.07 for the Falcons.

Leading the way for the Honkers was Hannah Owens, who won the 300 hurdles (51.99), and Olah Coker, who took first in the high jump (4-6). Citllali Fernandez took a second in the shot put (29-6) and Alexah Owens placed second in the 300 hurdles (54.21).

Yuba City’s 4x400 relay team of Hannah Owens, Emma Nelson, Alexah Owens and Alina Quintana also finished first in a time of 4:40.64, and the 4x100 relay team of Yazmeen Lopez, Quintana, Nelson and Coker took third in 54.44.

The Honkers’ frosh-soph boys team finished second behind Inderkum. Alexander Stottman won the 110 hurdles (16.9) and was second in the 300 hurdles (48.54), Jacob Langlois was first in the triple jump (33-10) and third in the 300 hurdles (50.98) and Karanvir Singh took first in the high jump (4-8).

Armando Escobar placed second in the 110 hurdles (21.68), Robert Teal was second in the shot put (34-4), and taking third for Yuba City were Mason Niccum in the high jump (4-8) and Jevan Duenas in the long jump (15-3).

The 4x400 team of Emiliano Murillo, True Burton, Isaac Price and Niccum in took first in 3:59.81, and the 4x100 team of Niccum, Price, Murillo and Kordell Young was second in 48.91.

River Valley’s frosh-soph boys placed sixth as a team. Giovanni Sanchez took second in the high jump (4-8), while third-placed finishers were Justin Tokos in the shot put (34-4), Joel Rojas in the 400 (58.18), Harman Sangha in the 1,600 (5:24.47) and Sam Mayo in the 3,200 (12:32.88).

The frosh-soph Honker girls finished second as a team. Valentina Hernandez took first in the 100 (13.94) and second in the 200 (30.02), Arianna Riggs placed second in the discus (55-9) and third in the long jump (11-4), Camtiress Bui was third in both the 100 (14.46) and the 200 (30.11), and Aemilia Thompson was third in the high jump (4-2).

Yuba City’s 4x100 relay team of Bui, Karen Lopez, Sumarrah Bluett and Crystal Soto took second in 57.41, and the 4x400 relay team of Thea White, Soto, Ana Diego and Bluett also took second in 4:57.59.

River Valley’s frosh-soph girls team finished fourth overall. Makena Glaze placed second in the shot put (23-0) and third in the discus (55-8), Hanna Abe was second in pole vault (5-6) and Isabella Hanson took second in high jump (5-2).

Inderpreet Kaur, Abe, Hanson and Savannah Johnson also teamed up to take third in the 4x100 relay in 57.54.

SWIMMING Blazers fall in dual meet In Marysville – Lindhurst’s boys and girls swim teams both came up short in a Golden Empire League three-way meet against West Campus and Dixon on Thursday.

The Blazers’ boys team fell to West Campus 55-25 and to Dixon 137-14. The top performanc­e for Lindhurst came in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where Eduardo Borja, Austin Yang, Pheng Lao and Kenneth Gaither teamed up to finish first in a time of 2:24.44.

Kenneth Gaither placed second in the both the 50 freestyle (30.90) and the 100 freestyle (1:15.29), and Pheng Lao took second in the 100 breaststro­ke

Lindhurst’s girls team lost to West Campus 108-36 and to Dixon 140-23. Cecilia Lopez finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:53.40) and Noelia Quintero took second in the 100 breaststro­ke, while the 400 freestlyle relay team of Lopez, Yulitza Rivera, Araceli Rodrigue, and Brenda Borja also took second in 7:03.51.
