Local players named to all-league teams

Six Mid-valley standouts take home Most Valuable Player honors

With the CIF State Championsh­ips coming to a conclusion on Saturday at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, all-league basketball teams can now be released by media outlets, and a host of local players were rewarded for their strong play on the hardwood this winter.

Here’s a look at those who earned allleague honors.

TRI-COUNTY CONFERENCE

In the last season competing in the TCC before realignmen­t kicks in next school year, River Valley High’s boys team finally broke through and claimed the first conference title in program history by finishing 19-9 overall and 10-2 in the conference.

Leading the way for the Falcons was senior center Charnpreet Bansal, who was named the TCC’S Most Valuable Player after posting team highs with averages of 16.1 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.

Also making the ALL-TCC squad for River Valley were senior guard Tarn Lally, junior forward Dawson Mcpeak and junior guard Sergio Garcia.

Yuba City finished tied for second in the conference with River City and saw three players make the ALL-TCC team. They were senior guard Jaipreet Virk, and junior guards Bryce Rogers and Illyaas Rafiq.

Also winning a TCC title this year was River Valley’s girls team, which embarked on the deepest playoff run in program history by reaching the Sac-joaquin Section Division III championsh­ip before losing to Christian Brothers. The Falcons then won a CIF State Playoff game for the first time ever before bowing out to defending state champion and eventual CIF Norcal champ West Campus in the second round.

They finished the year 24-9 overall and 11-1 in the TCC, and were represente­d on the all-conference team by senior guards Leaundra Walker-brown and Gloria Leoncamps, and senior forward Sidni Wisewright.

Yuba City went winless in the TCC but saw junior Lupe Rolon Pena make the allconfere­nce team.

River City senior guard Tiana Lowery was named the conference MVP.

GOLDEN EMPIRE LEAGUE

Though Marysville’s girls team finished fifth in the seven-team league and missed out on the playoffs, it didn’t stop high-scoring senior guard Elisa Canty-abdallah by taking home top honors by being named the GEL’S CO-MVP with West Campus’ Nia Johnson.

A four-year varsity starter for the Indians, Canty-abdallah led the team in nearly every category by averaging 25.0 points, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists per game. Her scoring average ranked second in the entire Sacjoaquin Section and was 17th in the state, according to Maxpreps.

Natomas’ David Mullens was named the league’s Coach of the Year.

On the boys side, Marysville junior forward Kameron Kline was named to the ALL-GEL team after helping the Indians to a fourth-place finish and a playoff berth.

No players from Lindhurst’s boys or girls teams were named all-league team this season.

Capital Christian senior Zachary Chappell was voted the GEL’S boys MVP and Dixon’s Brett Peterson was the Coach of the Year.

BUTTE VIEW LEAGUE

Both of Gridley’s boys and girls teams won league titles by finishing unbeaten in BVL play, and not surprising­ly, a pair of Bulldogs took home top honors by being named league MVPS.

On the boys side, Gridley senior guard Brian Wilkerson was named MVP by leading the Bulldogs to the Northern Section Division IV championsh­ip game and two wins in the CIF Division V state playoffs to reach the Norcal semifinals. He averaged 11.9 points, 4.4. rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.0 steals per game on a team that finished the year with a 25-7 overall record.

On the girls side, it was Gridley junior forward Maddyson Tull who was voted the MVP after stuffing the stat sheet on a nightly basis by averaging 20.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.

Senior forward Tyler Little and freshman point guard Grant Tull were both named ALL-BVL for the Bulldogs’ boys team, while senior center Lauren Erickson and freshman point guard Kennedy Tull were all-league selections for the Gridley girls.

Making the ALL-BVL team for Sutter’s boys were junior guard T.J. Meza and sophomore forward Ayden Hursky, while sophomore guards Macie Purbaugh and Reagon Ford were honored on the girls side for the Huskies.

Junior guard Brevin Brown and freshman forward Logan Garza were the ALL-BVL selections for Wheatland’s boys and girls teams, respective­ly.

SACRAMENTO VALLEY LEAGUE

Colusa’s boys squad finished undefeated in the SVL to take home the league title and made a run to the Northern Section Division V championsh­ip game before losing a heartbreak­er to Mt. Shasta for the title.

The Redhawks finished the year 24-6 overall and were led by senior center Tylor Gerrard, who was voted the league’s MVP after averaging 10.6 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.5 steals per game.

Earning spots on the ALL-SVL team for Colusa were senior forward Will Kalisuch, and junior guards Conner Saso and Blake Steidlmaye­r.

Seniors Ashvir Singh and David Topete were the all-league selections for Live Oak, and senior guard Alex Ambriz and junior guard Ramon Paiz made the ALL-SVL squad for Pierce.

Live Oak’s girls team finished second in the league to eventual Northern Section Division IV champion Willows, and saw senior guard Leslie Fregoso and senior forward Ellie Miskin earn all-league honors.

Senior forward Emily Kuykendall and junior guard Callie Muniz were the ALL-SVL selections for Pierce, and senior Ashley Huff was the lone pick for Colusa.

Willows sophomore Meghan Weinrich was voted the league’s MVP.

MID-VALLEY LEAGUE

East Nicolaus’ boys finished second in the MVL to Durham and saw senior forward Adin Starr and sophomore guard David Earhart both named to the all-league team.

Named ALL-MVL for third-place Williams were juniors Anthony Davalos and Hunter Povlsen.

Durham junior Jeremy Schafer was named the league’s MVP and Durham’s Josh Holbrook was the Coach of the Year.

East Nic’s girls team placed third in the league standings and was represente­d on the all-league team by junior forwards Jane Menigoz and Tiara Ceasar. Junior wing Barbara Bledsoe was the lone ALL-MVL performer for Williams.

SACRAMENTO METROPOLIT­AN ATHLETIC LEAGUE

Faith Christian’s boys team finished second in the SMAL to eventual CIF Norcal champion Sacramento Adventist and saw its postseason run come to an end in a loss in the Sac-joaquin Section Division VI semifinals to a Ripon Christian team that ended up winning the section title and played Sac Adventist for the Norcal championsh­ip.

Making the all-league team for the Lions were senior Zach Rodriguez and junior Ben George.

Sacramento Adventist senior Griffin Trull was named the league’s MVP and Sac Adventist’s Scott Tedman was the Coach of the Year.

No players were named first-team SMAL for Faith Christian’s girls team, which failed to win a league game this year.

Valley Christian senior Chloe Gunter was named the league’s MVP and Valley Christian’s Kim Contreras was the Coach of the Year.

MOUNTAIN VALLEY LEAGUE

Biggs’ girls team captured a share of MTVL title with Portola and leading the charge was junior point guard Megan Collins, who was voted the league’s CO-MVP after averaging 12.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.6 steals per game.

Making the all-league team for the Wolverines were senior guard Ciera Pyle, junior forward Karsyn Mclean, junior guard Ciera Van Quick and sophomore guard Grace Felkins.

Biggs’ Tim Sheridan was also named the MTVL’S Coach of the Year, while Portola freshman Mya Wilson shared MVP honors with Collins.

Making the all-league team for Maxwell were seniors Brenda Cano and Mireya Ocampo.

On the boys side, juniors Daniel Lara, Greg Rangel and Gerardo Ambriz were named ALL-MTVL for Maxwell, and senior guard Daniel Velazquez and sophomore guard Blake Mclean were all-league for Biggs.

Quincy sophomore Cameron Dinger was the MVP and Portola’s Tim Brubaker was the Coach of the Year.

NORTHERN PACIFIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Sophomore forward Colbey Ciro made the all-league first team for New Life Christian’s boys team and junior guard Courtney Hruska was named ALL-NPAC for the Crusaders’ girls squad.

Woodson did not play for the Raiders at the same time Gruden coached. He arrived in 2002, the year Gruden was traded to Tampa Bay. That season, Woodson at

age 37 had one of his biggest seasons with eight intercepti­ons with 225 yards in returns, including a career-long 98 yards against Denver.

The Raiders went on to win the AFC championsh­ip but were beaten 48-21 by Gruden’s Buccaneers.
