The First Presbyterian Church in Marysville will reopen its sanctuary doors for an Easter service and organ performance.

The sanctuary has been closed since the church property was put up for sale some time ago as the dwindling congregation had to face economic realities. A contingent of the church’s congregation has been worshiping weekly in the chapel.

“Organist Gail Pfister will play

the organ, the Rev. Jeff Richards will preach and we will all praise God in the sanctuary,” said Kathy Mckenzie, the church’s secretary. “Afterwards, there will be a glorious Easter egg hunt for all the children, with toys and candy to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. There will be coffee and snacks for the adults.”

Mckenzie said she’s excited to be part of the Easter sanctuary service and wants people to know that the church, in its new incarnation, is growing and still helping in the community.

“We’re growing in energy and ideas. It’s kind of a resurrection because every week we have new people coming, and Jeff’s leadership will help because he has a lot of experience working with homeless in the Sacramento area,” Mckenzie said. “On Fridays, the food closet is open for people who need it.”

She said although the church property is up for sale, members of the church are still doing work to help the community.

“I really believe the First Presbyterian Church has a role to play in the community to reach out to different people – the elderly, the disenfranchised and the neglected,” she said.

She said there will be a Maundy Thursday Service at 6 p.m. in the chapel followed by a soup dinner.
