Re: Gun laws

-

I have been a high school agriculture teacher for 36 years. This is my last year of teaching. I have seen many changes in education and our state over these many years. I remember vividly the first high school shooting of national significance that occurred at Lindhurst High School just up the road from WUHS. As I prepare to leave education I would like to give you an opinion of how to fix the shooting epidemic that seems to have consumed our nation. I am known as somewhat of a fix-it man. Here is my idea:

Change the gun laws in the state of California.

Allow retired peace officers, and former military or other similar professionals with gun experience and qualification to volunteer to protect our schools.

They would need a current CCW or similar permit.

They would have to pass a background check and psychological profile.

As a CCW holder and a teacher, I do not personally believe that arming teachers is the answer. I do believe that the public would step up and help the schools. I envision that every school in the state would have at least a few volunteers every day watching and protecting our kids. There are a lot of folks out there who want to help. The recent shooting in Maryland confirms that the presence of someone trained with a gun on a school campus is a valuable asset.

With the new legislation that makes schools totally gun free, I only see the problem getting worse, not better. Now is the time to take action.

Please create legislation to address this idea.

Sincerely,

Jeff Magill Sandy Hook) 130 injured by a knife and meat cleaver. Nice, France: 84 dead after a man drives a truck through a crowd. Jonestown, Guyana: 918 dead 304 were children cause of death poisoned Kool-aid. Boston marathon: three dead, injured several hundred others, including 16 who lost limbs by a pressure cooker bomb. Oklahoma City bombing: 168 dead, fertilizer and diesel (ANFO) truck bomb. Finally, New York City: 2,996 killed, over 6,000 wounded many first responders have died since then due to illness produced by the 9/11 attack caused by jet airplanes. Over 1,004,248 people died in a violent way and not one gun used. Why aren’t the people trying to take away knives, meat cleavers, Kool-aid, trucks, pressure cookers and diesel fuel? They all had a part in killing people just like guns.

After 9/11 we changed how we live in America. I think if we have armed WELL-TRAINED personnel at our schools it would help with slowing or stop the mass shootings. I heard people say they don’t want their child near a person with a gun, well, their family must live a sheltered life.

At the airports there are x-ray machines, bomb dogs & armed police officers. You go to a professional sporting event they search your bag, go through a metal detector and you have to used clear bags as purse, oh did I mention there are armed police there too. I hope they don’t ever take their child to a bank or Taco Bell in Linda, yes, armed security!

In closing, I am glad the United States of America has a Constitution. I just used my First Amendment right just like the protesters are doing. Please don’t try to take away my Second Amendment right!
