Marysville’s Galaviz, YC’S Craft fire no-hitters

Sutter cruises past Wheatland in BVL opener

Freshman Birdie Galaviz struck out 10 of the 18 batters she faced while firing a perfect game to propel Marysville High’s softball team to an easy 10-0 victory over visiting Natomas in the Golden Empire League opener at Abby Field on Tuesday.

Galaviz also helped herself out at the plate by going 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIS in a contest that was shortened to six innings due to the 10-run rule.

Hannah Clavelle went 2 for 4 with drove in a pair of runs, Raina Hudson was 2 for 4 with a double, and Leah Maldonado finished 2 for 3 with an RBI to help supply the offense for the Indians.

Marysville (4-2, 1-0) will take a break from its GEL slate and host Gridley in a nonleague game today at 4:15 p.m.

Yuba City 1, Rio Linda 0 In Yuba City – Blake Craft struck out 18 batters in a no-hit gem as the Honkers edged the Knights in a pitchers’ dual for a Tri-county Conference victory.

Craft was one out away from finishing off a perfect game before issuing a walk with two down in the top of the seventh. She also drove in Yuba City’s lone run with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.

Tayler Birkholz doubled and scored the only run of the game, and Alyssa Richebache­r singled in the third inning to account for the Honkers’ only other hit.

Yuba City (8-2, 2-0) continues conference play today at home against Pioneer.

Sutter 18, Wheatland 2, 5 inn. In Wheatland – The Huskies erupted for 17 hits – including three home runs and five doubles – to cruise to a mercy-rule victory over the Pirates in the Butte View League opener for both teams.

Juliana Capaul connected for a pair of tworun homers while finishing with four RBIS, and Hailey Schamanski hit a home run of her own for Sutter. Sam Anderson and Darcy Gillen both doubled as part of their three-hit performanc­es, Hailey Peterson went 3 for 4, Reagan Ford smacked two doubles and Emma Mcconville finished 2 for 4 with a double to round out the leaders.

The Huskies (6-1, 1-0) and Pirates (3-4-1, 0-1) will meet again on Thursday in Sutter. Woodland 17, River Valley 7,

5 inn. In Yuba City – The Falcons had no trouble hitting the ball, but seven errors came back to cost them in a loss to the Wolves in their TCC opener.

Samantha Farmer went 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIS, and Margarita Villar finished 3 for 3 and knocked in a pair of runs to lead the way offensivel­y for River Valley, which fell behind early after Woodland scored 12 times in the second inning. Jessa Meheras went 3 for 3 and Leah Devaughn added an RBI to help the cause in the loss.

The Falcons (0-7, 0-1) continue TCC play today at home against Inderkum.

Willows 9, Colusa 6 In Colusa – The Honkers came away with a stunner in the Sacramento Valley League opener, handing the Redhawks their first SVL loss since 2014 and snapping their 24-game winning streak against league competitio­n.

Helena Harris launched a lead-off home run as part of her 2-for-4 day, and Merissa Almeda went 3 for 3 for Colusa, which banged out 11 hits in the game but failed to come through in timely situations. Josie Garofalo finished 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles, and Jessica Hickel, Gracie Myers and Addie Taylor each went 2 for 4 in the loss.

The Redhawks (5-1-1, 0-1) will look to bounce back on Friday when they travel to Willows for a rematch.

BASEBALL Sutter 13, Wheatland 1, 6 inn.

In Wheatland – The Huskies began their quest for an eighth straight Butte View League title with a mercy-rule victory over the Pirates.

Todd Carr led the charge offensivel­y for Sutter by going 4 for 5 with four RBIS, while Dante Caracciola finished 2 for 3 with a double and knocked in four runs of his own. Zachary Mcdaniel went 3 for 4 with three RBIS, Cory Mcintyre was 3 for 5 with an RBI and scored three times, and Zach Yacavace scored four runs to complete the leaders.

Caracciola also earned the win on the hill, striking out four and taking a nohitter into the fifth before finishing off a two-hitter.

Sutter (7-3, 1-0) will host Wheatland (3-5, 0-1) in Game 2 of the series on Thursday.

The Huskies’ junior varsity team picked up a 21-0 victory in five innings. Eli Carlos led the way by going 3 for 5 with a double and four RBIS, and Brandon Taddy went 3 for 5 with drove in a run. Alex Solano earned the win for Sutter (7-4-1, 1-0), striking out four and allowing two hits over four innings. Gridley 13, Orland 0, 5 inn. In Orland – Lance Santerre went 4 for 4 with a triple and four RBIS at the plate and struck out eight while throwing a three-hit shutout on the mound to lead the Bulldogs to a mercy-rule win over the Trojans in their BVL opener.

Triston Platter finished 2 for 2 with two RBIS and Frank Leyva was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIS to help the cause for a Gridley offense that saw eight different players record at least one hit.

It marked the sixth straight win for Bulldogs (9-1-1, 1-0), which hosts Orland on Friday at 2 p.m.

Colusa 11, Willows 5 In Colusa – Raymond Frias went 3 for 4 with three RBIS and three runs scored to help power the Redhawks past the Honkers in their SVL opener.

Sophomore Xavier Lopez went 2 for 4 with a double in his second varsity game and closed things out with a scoreless seventh inning for Colusa (9-5, 1-0), which hosts Aspire Langston Hughes Academy of Stockton in a nonleague game today. River Valley 10, River City 4,

6 inn. In Sacramento – After taking two of three from the Raiders in a TCC series last week, the Falcons picked up a victory over River City again, this time on the second day of the College Baseball Match Classic at Rio Americano High.

Ayden Gould set the table for River Valley by going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Jason Shackelfor­d went 2 for 4 with two RBIS, and Jalen Dulai was 2 for 3 with a steal to lead the way at the plate. Niko Tejada belted a two-run triple, Josh Lee hit a two-run double and Aaron Minnix added a two-run single as well in the victory.

Colby Chipchase struck out six and allowed five hits over five innings to earn the win for the Falcons (4-9), who continue the tournament today at 9 a.m. against Lincoln at Folsom High.

CO-ED TENNIS Marysville 9, Natomas 0 In Marysville – The Indians didn’t drop a set en route to an easy GEL victory over the Nighthawks.

Nick Vang (6-0, 6-0) and Soloman Thao (6-4, 6-2) won their boys singles matches, while Amanda Yang (6-3, 6-4) and Leticia Staples (6-1, 6-2) swept their way to wins in girls singles.

In doubles play, Bovic Lentero and Jason Lin won 6-3, 6-1, and Chong Xiong and Allen Wong won 7-5, 7-5 on the boys side, while Angelie Xiong and Andrea Vang won 6-1, 6-0, and Hazel Knolle and Emma Elkins won 6-1, 6-0 in girls action.

The Indians also picked up a forfeit victory in mixed doubles to complete the sweep.

Marysville (3-1, 3-1) will host Lindhurst today in a battle for first place.

BOYS TENNIS Yuba City 6, Woodland 3 In Yuba City – The Honkers won five of the six singles matches to earn a TCC victory over the Wolves.

Winning singles matches for Yuba City were Andrew Williams (6-2, 6-2), Arjun Takhar (6-1, 6-1), Samual Oaks (6-1, 6-0), Diego Murillo (6-1, 6-1) and Anthony Young (6-0, 6-1). Dillon Buck and Javonn Mann also teamed up for a 6-1, 6-0 victory in doubles.

Yuba City (3-4, 3-4) will take next week off for spring break before returning to TCC action on April 9 at home against River City.

Colusa 6, Live Oak 3 In Colusa – The Redhawks improved their record to 6-0 on the year with a BVL victory over the Lions.

David Topete (6-2, 6-1) and Ian Hunter (6-1, 6-3) won singles matches for Live Oak and also teamed up for an 8-6 win in doubles.

No informatio­n from the match was provided by Colusa.

The Lions (1-4, 1-3) will host the Redhawks in a rematch today in Live Oak.

BOYS GOLF River Valley 202,

Inderkum 225 In Linda – Trey Davis shot a 1-under par 35, and the Falcons remained perfect on the season with a TCC victory over the Tigers at Peach Tree Golf & Club.

Riley Bell and Guramrit Bell both carded 39s, and Andrew Davidson finished with a 42 for River Valley (7-0, 5-0), which takes on Yuba City today back at Peach Tree.

TRAP SHOOTING Coon Creek sees four take 1st

In Stockton – Team Coon Creek Trap and Skeet Club out of Rio Oso competed in its second California Youth Shooting Sports Associatio­n event of the season over the weekend Stockton Trap & Skeet Club and saw four of its shooters take first place.

Jace Garza won the varsity division with a score of 99, Caleb Humphrey won the intermedia­te advanced division with a score of 93, Cory Walker was first in the intermedia­te entry division with a score of 86 and Ethan Whiteaker took first in the rookie division with a score of 86.

Audric Scheidel was second with an 86 and Cole Kennedy was third with an 84 in the intermedia­te advanced division. In skeet shooting, Scheidel took second with a 93 and Kennedy was third with an 89 in the intermedia­te advanced division.
