to have originated from a group in Switzerland that recently sent out hundreds of threatening emails to schools in the UK over the past few weeks. She said districts in Yubasutter received the email.

“Their Twitter page claims they might be expanding to ‘swat’ US schools today,” Dhillon wrote in the release. “Their goal is to create negative actions and chaos in communities.”

Sutter County Undersheriff Jeff Pierce said Monday that the department has been in contact with the district, and said the hoax email comes from some sort of “contest” originating from online gamers.

According to The Mercury News, districts in the Bay Area also received the threatening email, and reported that it was “part of a twisted contest from an overseas online gaming community to see who could generate the most school evacuations in America and the United Kingdom.”

The Mercury News reported that the email was entitled “Student help?” and purports to be sent by a student who has been bullied. The email threatens a bombing and shooting and additional violence against school staff, students and police.

No specific schools or districts are mentioned in the emails which are identical and from the same email address.
