Is Montana not sold on 49ers’ Garoppolo?

- By Cam Inman Mercury News

Jimmy Garoppolo’s ascension to the 49ers oncesacred quarterback throne earned him a Nfl-record $137.5 million contract. But did he win over franchise icon Joe Montana in the process?

Montana was hesitant Tuesday to crown Garoppolo as a franchise savior, even though he’s looking much like one after going 5-0 in his debut starts last season.

“I think it’s still a little early for it, myself,” Montana said on the NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” show. “He’s obviously has a lot more success in the games he’s played in so far than the other quarterbacks that have been there recently.

“I think there’s a lot of excitement in the Bay Area about it.”

Garoppolo, acquired in an Oct. 30 trade with the New England Patriots, didn’t take long to win over coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch. Road wins at Chicago and Houston were followed by home wins over AFC playoff contenders Tennessee and Jacksonville before a season-finale win at the Los Angeles Rams. Garoppolo’s 2018 encore will come with high expectations in a schedule that features only three teams that reached the playoffs last season -- the Rams, the Minnesota Vikings and the Kansas City Chiefs.

“This year will be a big tell on it,” Montana added. “They paid a lot of money for him. But I think there’s some belief there that he’ll be there for a while.”

LOS ANGELES (TNS) – Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred will be at Dodger Stadium today to announce that the Dodgers will host the 2020 All-star Game.

Dodger Stadium has not played host to the All-star Game since 1980, when a National League team managed by Chuck Tanner beat an American League team managed by Earl Weaver, 4-2.

The Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs were among the leading candidates to host the 2020 game. The Washington Nationals will host the game in July, and the Cleveland Indians will host the game in 2019.

Since 1980, nine teams have hosted the game twice: the Angels (1989, 2010), San Francisco Giants (1984, 2007), San Diego Padres (1992, 2016), Indians (1981, 1997), Chicago White Sox (1983, 2003), Minnesota Twins (1985, 2014), Houston Astros (1986, 2004), Cincinnati Reds (1988, 2015) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1994, 2006).
