Marysville pounds Dixon in return to diamond

Craft uses bat to power Yuba City past River Valley

Marysville High’s softball team finally got to play a game after a two-week hiatus and went on to bash 20 hits en route to a 14-4 Golden Empire League victory over Dixon on Wednesday afternoon at Abby Field in Marysville.

The Indians fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first before Hannah Clavelle and Madison Powell jump-started the offense by hitting back-to-back home runs in the bottom half of the inning. Dixon retook the lead with two more runs in the the second, but Marysville scored four times in the third to pull away for good and eventually ended the game in the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule.

Along with her home run, Powell finished the day 3 for 3 with two doubles and five RBIS, while Clavelle went a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIS to go along with her homer.

Rebekkah Montgomery was 2 for 2 with two RBIS, Veda Smith went 2 for 4 and Raina Hudson drove in a pair of runs to round out the offensive leaders.

Freshman Birdie Galaviz struck out four over four hitless innings of relief to record the win in the circle.

The Indians (6-2, 2-0 GEL) continue league action today back at home against Mesa Verde. Yuba City 17, River Valley 2, 5 inn. In Yuba City – Blake Craft had a monster day at the plate by going 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBIS to power the Honkers past the Falcons for an easy Tri-county Conference victory.

Monique Villavicen­cio drove in three runs while finishing 2 for 4 and Alyssa Richebache­r went 2 for 3 with two RBIS to help support the offensive barrage for Yuba City.

Craft started the game and struck out five over two hitless innings, and Angel Scott struck out three and allowed one earned run over the final three frames to close things out for the Honkers (11-3, 5-1), who host Woodland today in another TCC contest.

Akaisha Lewis went 2 for 3 with a stolen base, Margarita Villar hit an RBI double and Samantha Farmer knocked in a run with a single to provide the offense for River Valley (0-11, 0-5), which will compete at the Lindhurst Tournament starting Friday.

In the junior varsity game, the Bethany Baca struck out 10 and allowed only three hits as the Honkers overwhelme­d the Falcons for a 14-1 victory to remain unbeaten on the year. Baca also helped her cause with a 3-for-4 performanc­e with two triples and a double at the plate.

Monica Mitchell was 2 for 4 with a pair of home runs and Sydnee Chappell also connected for a homer for Yuba City (15-0, 5-0).

BASEBALL Yuba City 14, Inderkum 3, 5 inn. In Sacramento – The Honkers continued their dominance of the TCC by pounding out 14 hits on their way to a mercyrule victory over the Tigers.

Reigning A-D All-area Player of the Year Anthony Piegaro led the charge at the plate by finishing 2 for 3 with three RBIS, while Matt Clayton, Brennan White, Blake Baca and Brian Madison added two hits apiece. Clayton also drove in a pair of runs and Chance Diemer hit a two-run double.

Ten different players scored at least one run and eight different players recorded at least one hit in the game as Yuba City remained unbeaten in conference play while outscoring its seven opponents by a combined score of 81-8.

The Honkers (12-4, 7-0) will look to complete the three-game sweep on Friday night under the lights at Winship Field.

River Valley 4, Rio Linda 0 In Yuba City – Sophomore Ayden Gould struck out four while firing a one-hit shutout, and the Falcons moved to .500 in TCC play with a victory over the Knights at home.

Niko Tejada led the way offensivel­y for River Valley by going 2 for 3 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored, and Gould helped himself out by knocking in a run and scoring once. Jalen Dulai and Jacob Shackelfor­d both singled and scored a run as well in the victory.

River Valley (6-10, 4-4) will look to sweep the three-game series on Friday afternoon at Rio Linda.

West Campus 10, Marysville 0, 5 inn. In Marysville – The Indians lined into three double plays over the first three innings and committed three costly errors that led to big innings on the other side in a tough GEL loss to the Warriors at Weldon Field.

Seth Pyse went 2 for 2, and Justin Walsh and Ben Whitlock both doubled to provide the offense for Marysville (11-5, 6-3), which will look to win the three-game series when the teams meet for the rubber match on Friday in Sacramento.

In the junior varsity game, Cooper Williams went 2 for 3 with two doubles and Brison Lane struck out five while throwing a two-hitter to lead the Indians to an 11-1 victory in five innings. C.D. Portillo finished 2 for 4 with a triple and Jermry Hentderson chipped in with a pair of hits for Marysville (7-3, 4-3). Capital Christian 10, Lindhurst 0, 5 innings In Sacramento – The Blazers were limited to just two hits while being shut out for the second time this week against the perennial GEL power Cougars.

Samuel Alfred and Daniel Yanez both singled to account for the lone hits for Lindhurst (1-13, 1-7), which will look to snap a seven-game losing streak when the teams meet for the finale of the threegame series on Friday in Olivehurst.

Winters 9, Gridley 5 In Gridley – The Bulldogs have three losses this year, and all three of them have come to the hands of the small-school power Warriors following Wednesday’s nonleague loss at home.

Lance Santerre went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIS, Robert Peters doubled and knocked in two runs, and Ty Cota finished 2 for 4 to lead the way at the dish for Gridley, which used the game as a league tune-up by using five pitchers on the day.

The Bulldogs (14-3-1) return to league action on Friday when they travel to play Oroville in a Butte View League/westside League crossover game.

BOYS GOLF River Valley 203, Rio Linda 316 In Linda – The Falcons remained unbeaten on the season by crushing the Knights by 113 strokes in a TCC match at Peach Tree Golf & Country Club.

Trey Davis led the way by shooting a match-low 36, while Riley Bell and Guramrit Ghoman both carded rounds of 40. Ryan Jelavich added a 43 and Andrew Davidson finished with a 44 to complete the scoring five for River Valley.

The Falcons (15-0, 13-0) continue TCC action on Monday against Woodland at Davis Municipal Golf Course.

CO-ED TENNIS Marysville 7, Capital Christian 2 In Marysville – The Indians won three singles matches and four more in doubles to pick up a GEL victory over the Cougars.

Amanda Yang (6-0, 6-0) and Leticia Staples (6-0, 6-2) won in girls singles, while Solomon Thao (6-2, 2-6, 7-6[7-3]) earned in win in boys singles.

In doubles play, Marysville received wins from the girls teams of Angelie Xiong and Andrea Vang (6-0, 6-0), and Hazel Knolle and Laurel Knolle (6-4, 5-7, 10-3), and the boys duo of Chong Xiong and Johnson Xiong (6-1, 6-2). Allen Wong and Emma Elkins also teamed up for a 6-3, 6-1 victory in mixed doubles to round out the winners.

The Indians (4-2, 4-2) will host Mesa Verde today.

BOYS TENNIS Orland 8, Live Oak 1 In Live Oak – Alex Martinez and Alejandro Acosta joined forces for an 8-4 victory in doubles to account for the Lions’ lone win in a BVL loss to the Trojans. Live Oak (3-7, 3-6) continues league play today at Gridley.
