Martin pitches Lindhurst to win over Marysville

Sophomore Danika Martin struck out four and limited high-scoring Marysville to only three hits to propel Lindhurst High’s softball team to a 3-2 Golden Empire League victory on Friday at Abby Field in Marysville.

Alexis Steele doubled and drove in a pair of runs, and Talena Patty added an RBI double to lead the Blazers at the plate. Makaili Pepper went 2 for 3 with a run scored and Martin chipped in with a single in the first meeting this year between two Yuba County rivals that have combined to win the last eight GEL titles.

Madison Powel went 2 for 3 and an RBI, and Leah Maldonado singled to provide the offense for Marysville, which scored both of its runs in the sixth inning. The Indians put the tying run on second in the seventh, but she was thrown out at the plate to end the ballgame.

Birdie Galaviz struck out six and allowed two runs on three hits over five innings, and Josie Rapp allowed three hits and a run over the final two innings while striking out three for Marysville.

Lindhurst (11-8, 5-1 GEL) continues league play at home against Dixon on Monday, while the Indians (8-4, 4-2) host West Campus on Tuesday.

Sutter 7, Oroville 1 In Sutter – Sam Anderson finished 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIS, and Hailey Peterson struck out 13 while tossing a three-hitter to lift the Huskies past the Tigers in a Butte View League/westside League crossover game.

Reagan Ford also went 3 for 4 and scored twice, Hailey Schamanski was 2 for 4 to go with a solo home run, and Emma Mcconville went 2 for 3 with a double to round out the leaders for Sutter.

The Huskies (16-1, 5-0) host Orland in a BVL game on Tuesday.

Sutter’s junior varsity team picked up a 10-5 victory behind nine strikeouts from Sydny Harper. Caeley Jackson went 2 for 4 with two RBIS, Paige Thompson doubled and knocked in two runs, and Meadow Topete was 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Huskies (5-8, 4-1).

BASEBALL Yuba City 11, Rio Linda 0, 5 inn. Yuba City 17, Rio Linda 1, 5 inn. In Yuba City – Senior Matt Clayton and the Honkers continued to light up the Tri-county Conference by easily sweeping the Knights in a doublehead­er in Winship Field.

Clayton went 3 for 4 with a walkoff three-run homer in the first game and followed that up by going 2 for 2 with a grand slam in the second as Yuba City has now outscored its TCC foes by a combined score of 135-11.

Logan Meyers knocked in a pair of runs, and Brad Madison, Bryce Rogers and Chance Diemer each went 2 for 3 in the opener. Diemer also earned the win on the mound by pitching a complete-game shutout.

In the second game, Diemer finished with three RBIS and Sam Gonzales went 3 for 4 to help the Honkers to another blowout win. Brennan White added a 2-for-3 showing with two RBIS, and Blake Baca and Sam Danna both drove in two runs as well.

Rogers started the game and pitched the first two innings before Baca pitched the next two to earn the win. Jarin Mann tossed the fifth to close out the win.

Yuba City (16-4, 11-0) begins another three-game TCC series on Monday at River City. Woodland 10, River Valley 5 Woodland 7, River Valley 5 In Woodland – The Falcons hung tough, but dropped both ends of their TCC doublehead­er as the Wolves finished off a three-game sweep.

No informatio­n from the twinbill was provided by River Valley (6-14, 4-8), which returns to Woodland on Monday to begin a three-game series against Pioneer.

Sutter 3, Oroville 0 In Sutter – Zachary Mcdaniel struck out 11 while firing a one-hitter and Dante Caracciola provided the offense by blasting a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to power the Huskies past the Tigers in a BVL/WSL crossover game.

Austin Dorman knocked in the other run with an RBI groundout in the sixth, and Mcdaniel and Cory Mcdaniel both singled and scored once to account for Sutter’s other two hits in the victory.

The Huskies (15-5-1, 6-0) will play Colusa in a nonleague game tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Raley Field.

In the junior varsity game, Sutter rallied for 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth earn a 13-8 win over Oroville in a game that was called after five innings due to time constraint­s. James Tapia, Alex Bryan, Eli Carlos and Alex Solano finished with two hits each to lead the offense. Tapia doubled, tripled and drove in a run, and Bryan and Carlos added an RBI each for the Huskies (18-4-1, 6-0).

Gridley 2, Corning 1 In Gridley – Lance Santerre struck out 14 and allowed six hits in a complete-game effort, and the Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the seventh innings to beat the Cardinals in a BVL/WSL crossover game to stay unbeaten in league play.

Kellen Brothers hit a two-out double to spark the rally in the seventh. Ty Cota finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and Santerre was 2 for 3 with a double to lead the way for Gridley at the plate.

The Bulldogs (18-3-1, 6-0) host Wheatland on Tuesday.

Las Plumas 2, Wheatland 0 In Oroville – The Pirates were limited to just two hits in a loss to the Thunderbir­ds in another BVL/WSL crossover game.

Jordan Getz doubled and Connor Olson singled to account for Wheatland’s two hits. Getz also pitched well in the loss, striking out nine and surrenderi­ng just three hits in 51/3innings of work for the Pirates (7-10, 1-5).

Capital Christian 6, Marysville 0 In Sacramento – The Indians played much better than they did on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough avoid the three-game sweep in the finale of their GEL series against the powerhouse Cougars.

Ben Whitlock went 2 for 3, and Justin Walsh, Pryce Bramer and Canyon Williams added a single each to account for Marysville’s five hits. Sophomore Morgun Goss scattered six singles and allowed two earned runs over five innings to take the hard-luck loss.

The Indians (12-8, 7-6) will look to bounce back when they open a threegame series against Natomas starting Monday at home.

Willows 9, Live Oak 2 In Willows – The Lions committed seven errors in a Sacramento Valley League loss to the Honkers to settle for a split in their two-game series.

Ryan Burgess hit an RBI double and Pablo Curiel tripled and scored a run to lead the offense for Live Oak (4-8, 3-1), which begins another SVL series on Tuesday at Winters.

CO-ED TENNIS Lindhurst 6, Capital Chrisitan 3 In Sacramento – The Blazers clinched a share of the GEL title with West Campus after beating the Cougars in their regular-season finale.

This time, the girls side carried Lindhurst to victory with Kristin Vang (6-2, 6-0) and Mariia Zvereva (6-1, 6-4) winning in girls singles, and the teams of Alexia Velasquez and Aylin Zaragoza (6-0, 6-0), and Daisha Lor and Annie Yang (6-2, 6-1) winning in girls doubles.

Andrew Vang and Vichais Yang won their boys doubles match, 7-6(10), 6-2, and Pheng Thao and Kathy Vang joined forces for a 6-1, 6-2 victory in mixed doubles.

The Blazers (12-3, 11-1) will open the Sac-joaquin Section playoffs on Monday, April 30.

West Campus 6, Marysville 3 In Marysville – The Indians closed out the regular season with a loss to the Warriors to finish third in the GEL behind West Campus and Lindhurst.

Nick Yang and Solomon Thao won their boys singles matches by identical scores of 6-0, 6-1, and Chong Xiong and Johnson Xiong teamed up for a 6-2, 6-3 win in boys doubles to account for Marysville’s wins.

The Indians (8-4, 8-4) will join the Blazers at the GEL singles tournament on Monday in Natomas, followed by the GEL doubles tournament in Natomas on Wednesday.

TRACK & FIELD Pirates’ Grotegeer takes 1st again In Loomis – Senior standout Erica Grotegeer continued her storied athletic career at Wheatland by winning both the discus and the shot put at the Del Oro Invitation­al on Friday.

Grotegeer won the discus with a throw of 168 feet, 11½ inches and the shot put with a heave of 36-8. Grotegeer finished third in the discus at the CIF State Championsh­ips last year and is currently the top-ranked thrower in California this season.

Chris Soderlund took third in both the discus (114-0) and the shot put (40-4) in the frosh-soph portion of the meet for the Pirates.

INDIANAPOL­IS (TNS) – The Cavaliers picked the worst possible time to blow their first lead in a fourth quarter all season.

Putrid not just in the final 12, but for much of the second half, the Cavs puked all over themselves in a 92-90 loss to the Indiana Pacers in Game 3 of this first-round playoff series.

The Pacers now lead the series, 2-1. Cleveland was ahead by 17 at halftime and 69-63 through three quarters. The Cavs were 40-0 (playoffs and regular season) when leading through three quarters.

Bojan Bogdanovic outscored Lebron James. He erupted for a playoff-career high 30 points, including 15 in the final quarter.

James finished with 28 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. He shot 10-of-22 with six turnovers. The Cavs trailed 84-77 before he went on a 7-0 run by himself to tie it, but Indiana responded with another quick seven.

Victor Oladipo finished with 18 points, six rebounds and seven assists, but shot 5-of-15. If you had told the Cavs before the game that those would be Oladipo’s numbers, they’d have figured a win was in order.

Kevin Love scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half. Wizards 122, Raptors 103 WASHINGTON – Bradley Beal heeded his coach’s plea to “do his job” by scoring 21 of his 28 points in the first half, his All-star backcourt running mate John Wall delivered 28 points and 14 assists, and Washington beat Toronto in an occasional­ly heated game to cut its first-round playoff series deficit to 2-1.

Demar Derozan led Toronto with 23 points on 10-for-22 shooting one game after scoring 37, and Kyle Lowry had 19 points and eight assists.

Bucks 116, Celtics 92 MILWAUKEE – Khris Middleton scored 23 points, Giannis Antetokoun­mpo added 19 and Milwaukee used a dominating first half to overwhelm Boston, narrowing its deficit in the firstround playoff series to 2-1.

Eric Bledsoe and Jabari Parker each added 17 for the energized Bucks, who held the Celtics without a field goal for nearly an 11-minute stretch of the first half.

Al Horford scored 16 for the Celtics, who fell behind by 23 at halftime and got no closer than 76-62 with 3:06 left in the third.
