Sutter sheriff candidates discuss budgets, school safety and cooperation with ICE
Editor’s note: This is the last of four parts reviewing candidate responses during a forum conducted Wednesday evening at the Yuba City City Council chambers.
Sponsored by the Appealdemocrat and the Yuba-sutter Chamber of Commerce, candidates for Sutter County district attorney and Sutter County sheriff answered questions from citizens. Moderators were Steve Miller, editor of the Appeal, and Bob Harlan, former radio station newsman and the current United Way CEO.
This part covers the second half of the session for sheriff candidates: Brandon Barnes, Yuba County jail commander; Dennis Hauck, Yuba City Police sergeant; and Jeff Pierce, Sutter County undersheriff. (The forum was streamed live and is available for viewing on the Appeal-democrat Facebook page.)
Q: Is the sheriff’s office up-to-date on advanced investigations techniques with such a limited budget?
Pierce said the department is a member of the Sacramento Hi-tech Crimes Task Force, which provides assistance, and they do have high-tech forensic computers. The issue, he said, is finding somebody with the expertise in handling those types of crimes.
Hauck said part of being the sheriff is being able to network with other agencies, and having worked at YCPD for the last decade, he already has that bridge built. He said the YCPD has two in-house investigators who have that expertise in investigating high-tech crimes. His intent is to develop an investigations task force working closely with YCPD.
