D.A. candidates on: Credibilit­y, violence, quality of life

Editor’s Note: This is one in a series of articles featuring responses by candidates. This format allows voters to compare candidates more closely on selected questions.

This installmen­t features candidates for Sutter County district attorney – incumbent Amanda Hopper and challenger Chris Carlos.

Questions were sent and returned by email. Candidates were given word limits for their answers. Excavators from Ferma Corporatio­n begin removing the temporary roller-compacted concrete sidewalls of the Lake Oroville main spillway in Butte County. These temporary walls will be replaced with structural concrete walls later this year.

1. (50-word limit) Please tell us a little about yourself – you are free to list any credential­s or background you feel is relevant.

Hopper: In my first term as District Attorney, we have increased training, productivi­ty and communicat­ions. I secured a new case management system and the office is transition­ing to going paperless, which provides significan­t time and fiscal savings. I have implemente­d many significan­t programs, proactive efforts and policy updates.

Carlos: Lifelong Yuba-sutter resident with 18 years as a practicing attorney. My experience includes 40 jury trials, service as a deputy district attorney in Butte County and Sutter County and now the owner of a private-practice. I’m the only candidate with murder trial experience.

2. (100-word limit) Since the last district attorney’s resignatio­n from the post, the office itself has been in the news over the past few years. What is your general assessment of the office, its credibilit­y, and its effectiven­ess. How will you bolster the department’s credibilit­y?

Carlos: Hopper has been involved in scandal after scandal her entire term as DA. The baggage she brought into this office, combined with her inexperien­ce and vindictive nature have destroyed her credibilit­y and the DA’S office. It’s truly sad.

Sutter County residents are now paying the high price through horribly mismanaged cases and giant lawsuit payouts. My plan to rebuild the DA’S office, and establish credibilit­y, is outlined on my website at www.lesspoliti­csmoreserv­ice.com.

Hopper: This office is united in its commitment to serving justice and consistent­ly prosecutes criminals with dedication and integrity. The people in this office continue to do their job with dignity, despite the negative press and despite the ongoing lies and smear campaign being conducted.
