LOCAL ROUNDUP Marysville softball falls in 2nd round

- Appeal-democrat

After scoring at will in an easy 11-0 victory over Union Mine in the postseason opener two days earlier, Marysville High’s softball team traveled to Sacramento on Thursday and couldn’t find its usual offensive production in a 7-2 loss to No. 4-seeded Rosemont in the second round of the Sac-joaquin Section Division IV playoffs.

The No. 5 Indians came into the day averaging nearly 10 runs per game, but were limited to just three hits in their final game of the year.

Marysville fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first but answered with two runs in the second to cut the lead to 3-2. The score remained the same until the fifth, when the host Wolverines struck for three runs to put the game out of reach. Rosemont added one more run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Raina Hudson, Madison Powell and Josie Rapp each singled, and Hannah Clavelle drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to provide the offense for the Indians, who ended the year with a 16-7 overall record.

“I’m really proud of this group. I feel like we overachieved all year,” Marysville coach Maurice Clavelle said. “We ended up winning back-to-back league titles and a playoff game. Nobody thought we could make it this far with only one senior starter and a freshman pitcher.” COLLEGE TRACK & FIELD Yuba sending six athletes to state In Sacramento – Yuba College saw six of its athletes qualify for the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships after turning in top finishes at the Norcal Regional Finals over the weekend at Sacramento City College.
