Plumas Lake golf tournament to benefit injured veterans

Golfers tee off today

A golf tournament is scheduled today at the Plumas Lake Golf and County Club in Olivehurst, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to an organization that assists injured veterans.

This year’s star recipient will be retired Army Sgt. Byron Henson, who was injured in April 2008 when his sniper team was surrounded by an Iraqi insurgency. His team’s vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device that pierced the Humvee’s armor. Shrapnel struck Henson in the side of his body and skull, with some fragments embedding into his brain. He spent the next two years in rehabilitation for his brain injury.

Those that participate in today’s event will get a chance to hear Henson’s story and learn about how proceeds from these special events go toward helping other veterans like him. The event is being coordinated by Patriots Honor, a nonprofit organization that is completely volunteer.

Lisa Harris, a member of Patriots Honor, said the fundraisers help endorse and promote the organization’s mission, which is to help improve the lives of injured veterans and their families.

The local course’s president and vice president have played in past Patriots Honor events at Lincoln Hills Golf Club and wanted to bring the event to the Yuba-sutter area to help raise money, said Donna Valadez, treasurer of the Plumas Lake Golf and Country Club.

Valadez said they are expecting about 80-100 people to attend today’s golf tournament.

There are still plenty of available spots for people that want to participate, she said. All they need to do is show up at 7:30 a.m. for registration. The event costs $90 per player to participate, which comes with a round of golf, a cart, a goodie bag, a free re-play golf certificate and a tri-tip dinner.

The two-man scramble shotgun start begins at 9 a.m. There will also be a raffle at the event.

Donations or raffle prizes will also be accepted, she said.

The Plumas Lake Golf and Country Club is located at 1551 Country Club Road., Olivehurst.
