DUI ARREST

After months of diligent preparation and coordination amongst organizers for the Kiwanis Club of Yuba City Lobster Feed, it is the last 24 hours that makes Marie Teria the most nervous.

The reason for the last minute jitters comes from the fact that the 390 lobsters, which will feed hundreds of guests at the Yuba-sutter Fairgrounds on Saturday evening, is scheduled to arrive from Maine just several hours beforehand.

“You can imagine the stress,” Teria, president of the club, said. “I don’t sleep until those lobsters get off that plane. Can you imagine not having lobsters when all those people show up?”

Building upon a tradition that began 24 years ago, Teria said the annual event is the culmination of planning that begins in late December.

Terri Boyer, a past club president who currently sits on the board of directors, said the Lobster Feed is the most important event of the year for the club.

“It is our main fundraiser, which allows us to give back to children for the entire year,” Boyer said. “We give back to several schools, we just had our bicycle rodeo and we give out scholarships for the members of our Key Club. So this is basically our year’s funding to be able to do those things.”

Teria said she estimates the event will generate anywhere from $30,00$40,000 after expenses. Considering 100 percent of the funds will go back into the community, Teria understands the importance of the annual event.

“Having an event like this come together is something special,” Teria said. “This event makes me feel good and members of the club feel good. We do a lot for the community, so the more money we raise, the more we could serve. For me, that is my being.”

The event will include a silent auction, several raffles for various prizes and a gun raffle. One of the highlights of the night, Teria said, will be the auction for a pair of 5 pound lobsters, which typically generates a lot of excitement in the room.

In addition, Teria said organizers of the event went all out to provide great desert options for attendees afterwards.

For those attending the event, the Lobster Feed will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and will be held at the Yuba-sutter Fairgrounds main exhibit building, 442 Franklin Ave., Yuba City. Teria said there is a possibility of tickets becoming available up until the beginning of the event.
