Community garden begins to sprout at Yuba City museum

-

Artisan Community Garden members work at the Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County in Yuba City.

The group came to the museum complete with a business plan for the garden project and museum director/curator Jessica Hougen welcomed the idea.

“It’s a great fit for the museum because a lot of what we talk about is the history of agriculture in the area and to look outside and see a garden outside is a great connection to make,” Hougen said.

She said they started in the fall of 2017 and got all the necessary approval from various agencies and the Artisan Community Garden was born.

“New Earth Market donated fencing, The Grange donated soil, Richard’s Tree Service donated wood chips and Bel Air Market donated some of the plants,” Milner said.

Nine raised beds are organized throughout the fenced in garden area, which is attached to the museum’s main building.

Several tomato plants, with cages for support, are up and Deardorff, Milner and Burns, along with their young children, have been working to make the garden come to life.

“The Girl Scouts, Inalliance, Little Stars Music & Movement have sponsored beds and we have a couple more available if anyone is interested,” Milner said. “We have kids programs and events planned for the garden.”

She said they also have plans to hold healthy eating seminars, cooking workshops, art classes, school tours and more.

Milner said they’re looking for people willing to donate their time to help on the project and have a need for some items, which people can drop off at the museum.

They’re in need of shovels, rakes, spades, watering cans, gloves, shears, an outdoor chair set, a small shed, pots, garden décor and river rock.
