Is the Yuba City Sears one of the stores that are closing?

- By Ruby Larson rlarson@appealdemocrat.com

Cities around the country are watching for the list ... it was announced that more Sears stores were to close. Lots more.

So far, Yuba City’s Sears is not one of the stores listed. Emphasis on the “so far.”

Sears Holdings announced on Thursday that the chain will be closing 72 more Sears and Kmart stores in early September. The company found 100 nonprofitable stores in the first quarter and has released a list of 63 Sears and Kmart stores that will be closing and is further evaluating other stores and will update the list as needed, according to a press release.

As of April 29, 2017, Sears had 1,275 stores open but as of May 5, 2018, there 894 stores open. Kmart had 624 stores open at the same point in 2017 and now have 365 stores open in 2018. The local Kmart closed a few years ago.

The company has generated approximately $2.9 billion in revenue during the first quarter compared to $4.2 billion in the same quarter in 2017, it’s been reported. Store closures in the last year contribute to approximately two-thirds of the decline, according to a press release.

Liquidation sales for affected stores will begin as soon as June 14.

Eligible employees who are affected will be receiving severance pay and be given the opportunity to apply for open positions at other Sears or Kmart stores.

So far, the only California stores on the closure list are a Sears in City of Industry and the Kmart in Ridgecrest.
