Voting Q&A ahead of Tuesday’s election

- By Rachel Rosenbaum rrosenbaum@appealdemocrat.com

With only a couple days left until Election Day, Donna Hillegass, deputy Yuba County Clerk-recorder, answered some common questions so voters are best prepared for the big day. (Similar questions and answers from the Sutter County side appeared in an earlier edition).

Q: Can voters mail in ballots on Election Day? How will they know if they count?

A: Mail your ballot so it is postmarked by Election Day, June 5, 2018 (It must be received no later than June 8, 2018). Deliver your ballot to the Yuba County Elections Office by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Drop off your ballot on Election Day at any polling place.

How to check the status of your vote-by-mail ballot: https://voterstatus.sos.ca.gov/

After you log in, your ballot status will be displayed under “Voting History.”

Q: What if a voter recently moved?

A: A Yuba County voter who moved within the county before May 21 may vote a provisional ballot at their new polling place.

Q: What if a voter doesn’t know where their polling place is?

A: They can look up their polling place at: http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place/

Q: For those needing ballots in other languages... Do they ask for those at the polling place?

A: Yuba County is a mandatory bilingual county with ballots printed in English and Spanish. Precincts in Supervisorial district 1 (based on SOS demographic requirements) will have a Hmong facsimile of the ballot available to assist voters.

Q: Are there any other common questions your elections offices are receiving that you’d like to address?

A: An eligible Yuba County resident who is not registered may register and vote at the Yuba County Elections Office until 8 p.m. on Election Day. The person will be required to cast their ballot at the time they register.

NOTE: For Yuba County this must be done at the Yuba County Elections Office: 915 8th St., Suite 107, Marysville.

IMPORTANT: Voters must sign their vote by mail envelope. This signature must match the signature on their voter registration record.

Election results will be available at www.yubaelections.org beginning at 8 p.m. on Election Day.
