Racing heats up with five-division show set for tonight

- By Troy Hennig Marysville Raceway

While the temperatures around Northern California heat up, so does the racing at Marysville Raceway.

Tonight, the action track of the West will host five racing divisions to give the fans a full night of entertainment.

Winged 360 sprint cars, Crate Sprints, IMCA Sport Mods, Super Stocks and Hobby Stocks are all set to rumble on the quarter-mile oval dirt track, giving fans the perfect time to take the kids out and introduce them to these dirt track heroes.

Marysville’s Jeremy Hawes continues to be the leader of the pack. Last year’s winged 360 sprint car champion, Hawes holds a seven-point edge over Chico’s Kenny Allen. Both drivers have picked up a feature win this season.

Third place in points is Mike Monahan of Reno. Monahan is just two points back of Allen and nine behind Hawes. So far in 2018, 29 different drivers have earned championship points in the winged 360 sprint car division at Marysville Raceway.

Damian Merritt is leading the IMCA Sport Mod standings heading into tonight. Merritt has one win in four starts during 2018. Howard Law is currently second and visited victory lane once this season. Jimmy Ford has been consistent all season and is due for a win.

The Crate Sprint division is a log jam at the top of the points. Jeff Macedo is leading the division by six points over Yuba City’s Jaylon Deas. Mike Sayre is third and nine points back. Cameron Haney is 14 points back of Macedo. These top four are producing great on track racing and a tight championship point battle.

Kyle Chaney leads the Hobby Stocks with a three-point advantage over Mel Byers. Only one point race has been completed this season and Chaney was the winner. Thirteen competitors competed in the previous race. In fact, that night’s Hobby Stock main event was one of the better races.

The Super Stock championship is looking like a two-car race in 2018. Chris Warner leads James Castleberry by one point. Third in points is Richard Vanderploeg and he is 47 points behind Warner.

The pit gate will open at 3 p.m. while the front grandstand gate opens at 5 p.m. The pit meeting is being moved from 5:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in hopes of getting the competitors on the track earlier for wheel packing and hot laps.

Adult general admission is $13 into the grandstands. Seniors, juniors and military with ID are $11 each. Children ages 6-11 are $6, and kids ages five and under are free.

A family pass is also available and consists of two adult tickets, two junior tickets or three tickets for a combined price of $40.
