Seven local players named All-northern Section

the Appeal-democrat Sutter High senior Sam Anderson has been named the Northern Section’s Player of the Year after leading the Huskies to their second straight Division IV title.

The All-northern Section softball teams were released on Tuesday, and a combined seven players from championsh­ip teams at Sutter and East Nicolaus High earned spots among the section’s best in a vote compiled by media members from the Appeal-democrat, Chico Enterprise-record, Redding Record Searchligh­t and Maxpreps.

Topping the list of local players was Sutter senior Sam Anderson, who was named the section’s Player of the Year after leading the Huskies to their second straight Northern Section Division IV championsh­ip this spring.

Also named the first-team catcher for the second year in a row, Anderson was voted the Butte View League’s MVP for the second consecutiv­e season after posting team highs with a .531 batting average and 48 RBIS. She was also second on the club with 35 runs scored, and hit 12 doubles, three triples and two home runs for a team-best .781 slugging percentage.

Joining Anderson on the first team were a pair of teammates in sophomore pitcher Hailey Peterson and junior third baseman Juliana Capaul.

Pitching all but two innings for the Huskies, Peterson earned her second straight first-team selection after finishing the year with a 27-1 record to go along with a 1.27 ERA. She struck out 240 batters in 176 innings, and helped herself out at the plate by batting .487 with 22 RBIS, 26 runs scored, seven doubles, two triples and two home runs.
