Ryan Reynolds knows about the mid-week blues in high school football.

But the Sutter High coach feels there will be a different story on Saturday night.

There are 15 Mid-valley players who are part of the South squad, in which Reynolds and his Sutter assistant coaches are overseeing, at the 41st annual Lions All-star Football Game.

This year’s game will take place at Shasta College’s Memorial Stadium in Redding. This week, the South players have been practicing at Chico High and living inside the dorms at Chico State.

Anderson’s Don Trotter is the North head coach.

“I think they are going to be really good,” said Reynolds of the North. “They’ve got a great quarterback out of Red Bluff (Marshal Brouse) … and some good linemen from Anderson. They are going to be a really tough team.”

Since Monday, Reynolds and his staff have been practicing their South team three times a day – South coach Yuba City Yuba City

mornings, shortly after lunch and evenings. But only the morning sessions have had players wearing full gear. The players only wear Tshirts and shorts in the afternoon, then shoulder pads and shorts for the evening practices.

“They have been going really well,” Reynolds after Wednesday night’s practice.

The South players have spent that time learning the Huskies’ gun and pistol offense, which can show signs of the wing-t formation.

“It’s all wing-t blocking,” Reynolds said. “We throw the ball quite a bit out of it. More of a hybrid option wing-t.” Sutter Pierce

On defense, the South will run a base 40 defense, which has a 4-3 look.

Reynolds feels the players’ attitude toward the game will pick up before kick-off.

“We’ve got the mid-week blues right now,” Reynolds said. “The third day of camp during threedays is the toughest. The kids are sore, they are tired, they are beat up, but they are definitely coming together. They are really bonding. It’s a great group of kids.”

The approach to preparing for the game is similar to what Reynolds and his staff used in the 2016 contest. But he’s hoping with better River Valley Sutter

results, as the North produced a 48-6 win two years ago.

“I think what we’ve done differently than last time is we’re preparing our kids mentally and physically,” Reynolds said. “Even though it’s an all-star game, and it’s for fun, the North really takes it seriously. We’re in it to win it and compete at a high level. We are preparing them for a hard-fought game.”

One Mid-valley player who stood out at practices as of Wednesday evening was Marysville defensive tackle Thomas
