GREAT WEST LEAGUE Gold Sox beat Seals for 2nd straight win

- Appeal-democrat

It took 18 games, but the Yuba-sutter Gold Sox finally have themselves a winning streak. One night after snapping a season-long, six-game losing skid, the Gold Sox strung together consecutive wins for the first time this summer following a 10-6 victory over the San Francisco Seals on Wednesday night at Colusa Casino Stadium in Marysville.

Yuba-sutter wasted little time getting ahead and led from start to finish after scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Tyler Smith, who knocked in the first run of the night with a fielder’s choice. Steve Robinson followed with an run-scoring single, Smith scored on a wild pitch, and Brody Clifford and Josh Winkler both added RBI singles to stake Yuba-sutter to a quick 5-0 lead.

The Seals made it a two-run game by scoring three times in the top of the third, but the Gold Sox took advantage of three walks, a single, a hit batsman and two wild pitches to score twice in the bottom of the fourth to go up 7-3.

San Francisco once again cut into the deficit by scoring twice in the fifth inning, only to see Yuba-sutter pull away from there.

Mike Shoenberger hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, and Clifford blasted a tworun homer in the sixth to stretch the lead to 10-5 and give the Gold Sox control of the game.

Robinson led Yuba-sutter’s 10-hit attack by going 3 for 4 with two steals and two runs scored. Clifford went 2 for 3 with three RBIS and scored twice, Smith knocked in two runs, and Doll and Jacob Terao scored two runs each.

Ben Kaser struck out four, scattered 11 hits and allowed two earned runs over six innings to earn the win. Billy Moreland fanned four over the final three innings to pick up the save.

The Gold Sox (5-13) will look to complete a three-game sweep of the Seals (5-11) when the teams meet for the finale today at 7:05 p.m. at the College of Alameda.
