I listened today to Donald Trump trying to justify his “zero tolerance” immigration policy. It is so obvious that he doesn’t appreciate how America, from the very beginning, has been built by ongoing generations of immigrants from all over the world. Most arrived poor and spoke little or no English. They all faced discrimination from previous generations of immigrants. Over time, their kids learned English, fought in our military and became law abiding taxpayers and homeowners. This cycle has repeated over and over for 400 years. Now our president is abusing the children of immigrants in a misguided effort to force Con- gress to take apart a process that has already made America great.
But, I wish to highlight two other related issues:
1) European countries have suffered from homegrown Muslim terrorism much more often than America. The fact that Muslim immigrants are treated better here in America is often cited by experts as the reason to explain the difference. Rather than protecting Americans, our border policy is likely creating a generation of youth with real reasons to hate America and to later become future terrorists.
2) Our border policy verges on being a crime against humanity. Ever since the Nuremberg Trials after World War II, America has joined the world in prosecuting, imprisoning and executing military and politi- cal leaders who have committed such crimes. A crime against humanity is defined as an act of persecution, often government sanctioned, against a specific class of individuals. These immigrant youth are being mentally tortured every day through Mythology abounds.
