Gems outshine Gold Sox to complete sweep

- Appeal-democrat

The Yuba-sutter Gold Sox entered Thursday night’s game against the Klamath Falls Gems looking to avoid a three-game sweep and put an end to a disastrous run of pitching that saw them surrender 10 runs or more in four of their last five games.

As it turned out, their woes on the mound only continued. Klamath Falls wasted little time by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning and continued to add on from there to leave town with a 13-8 victory and a series sweep at Colusa Casino Stadium in Marysville.

Yuba-sutter entered the night in last place in the Great West League and saw its league-worst 7.64 team ERA rise even higher after allowing 11 earned runs in Thursday’s loss. Klamath Falls scored at least 13 runs in all three games, and tallied 43 runs in all during the series.

Mike Shoenberger and Angel Mora hit RBI singles, and Tanner Harper walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning to help the Gold Sox cut into the lead, but the Gems quickly regained control of the game with a run in the second and four more in the third to up the margin to 10-3.

Mora delivered his second RBI single and an error allowed another two runs to score in the bottom of the third to make the score 10-6. That was as close as Yuba-sutter would get as the Gems got a run back in the top of the fourth, and scored once in the sixth and again in the seventh make it a 13-6 game.

The Gold Sox scored an unearned run in the seventh and Shoenberger hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to complete the scoring.

Mora finished 3 for 5 with two RBIS, Shoenberger went 2 for 4 with two RBIS, Josh Winkler had two hits and Brody Clifford scored twice for Yuba-sutter, which totaled 10 hits on the night.

Though the Gold Sox continue to swing the bats well, they have now allowed 228 runs in 24 games played this season.

Yuba-sutter (6-18) will look to turn the page when it hosts the Lincoln Potters (15-11) to open another three-game series today at 7:05 p.m.
