Gold Sox rally past Medford in extra innings

- Appeal-democrat

Trailing 3-0 and mustering only four hits heading into the seventh inning, the Yubasutter Gold Sox had their backs against the wall against the Medford Rogues on Friday night.

They then responded with one of their biggest wins of the season.

The Gold Sox rallied back to take a 4-3 lead in the eighth, gave the lead away in the bottom of the ninth and bounced back again on Josh Winkler’s tworun triple in the top of the 10th inning to earn a come-from-behind 6-4 victory at Harry and David Field in Medford, Oregon.

Winkler drove in Elijah Smith with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to finally get Yuba-sutter on the scoreboard, and the Gold Sox forged ahead by stringing together four hits to score three more runs in the eighth.

Brody Clifford singled and scored on a wild pitch, Smith hit an RBI single and Nick Ultsch drove in a run on a groundout in the inning, giving Yuba-sutter a 4-3 lead heading into the ninth.

Medford was able to manufacture a run to tie the game to send it to extras, but the Gold Sox promptly answered when a hit batsman and an error set the table for Winkler’s big two-run triple in what proved to be the winning margin.

Winkler also got the job done on the mound, striking out four and allowing two hits over three innings of relief to earn the win to go along with his three RBIS at the plate.

Yuba-sutter out-hit the Rogues 12-7 in the game. Steve Robinson led the way by going 3 for 4, while Smith and Mike Shoenberger both recorded two hits and scored twice.

It marked the third road win of the season for the Gold Sox (9-22), who continue the three-game series against the Rogues (19-16) today in Medford.
