worked to teach respect to children at the property: she’s hosted an event where children plant flowers, put their names on it and are tasked with caring for it. She said her enthusiasm comes from being a property owner as well as a Marysville resident.

“People want to complain about the crime, but no one is really doing anything proactive,” Heer said. “I’ve never been so connected with the community before. I’m loving it.”

Events can be anything from an ice cream social to a potluck barbecue, Yuba City Community Policing Coordinator Katy Goodson said in a press release. Yuba City events registered by Aug. 1 will get a visit from the Yuba City police and fire departments.

In Yuba City, so far, there will be events at Mahal Plaza (1917 Franklin Road) and Richland Housing (448 Garden Highway), along with other neighborhood festivities. In Marysville, events will be hosted by Mayor Ricky Samayoa at Triplett Park (Rideout Way between Covillaud and Ahem streets); at Circle Park (Rideout Way between Greely Drive and Boulton Way) hosted by John Nicoletti; and at Hunters Landing from 3:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

Heer said children hear their parents become intimidated or complain when they get pulled over by police, instead of being encouraged to go up and talk to them. She hopes National Night Out events are just one step in making communities safer.

“It’s important for us to change that perspective children have of police,” she said. “We need to look up to them and utilize them when they need them.”

She fled the store westbound on Lincoln Road in a black Mercedes.
