Northern Section teams play waiting game

This is the second in a two-part series of Yuba-sutter high school football teams taking part in summer workouts and going through the dead period.

Sutter High football head coach Ryan Reynolds and his Huskies are taking part in another game that they have no control over. It’s called the waiting game. The Huskies are one of the 10 Yuba-sutter area high school football teams that are part of the Northern Section. Sutter, along with the rest of the section, can’t officially begin conditioning week until Aug. 6.

On Monday, Yuba City, River Valley, Marysville and Lindhurst began their conditioning practices. But those four schools are a part of the Sac-joaquin Section, which voted nearly two years ago to bump up the start of its fall, winter and spring sports seasons by two weeks.

“We’re the only section (in California) that did not move the start date back,” Reynolds said. “Our dates don’t line up now. It’s very frustrating.”

Sutter will open its season at Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa on Friday, Aug. 24. The Huskies play their first home game against Red Bluff on Friday, Aug. 31.

Two weekends ago, the Huskies held their own three-day, non-contact camp that included 7-on-7 passing games. Eureka, along with Maria Carrillo of Santa Rosa, Mckinleyville, Clear Lake and Sutter competed at the camp. The players worked on many drills on both sides of the ball in preparing for the upcoming season.

Before the camp, the Huskies were working out in the weight room and taking part in conditioning drills five days a week in the evenings.
