Kings to sign Gabriel to two-way contract

The Sacramento Kings plan to sign forward Wenyen Gabriel to a two-way contract, a league source confirmed to The Bee’s Jason Jones on Saturday. Gabriel, who played two seasons for the University of Kentucky from 2016-18, competed with Sacramento in both the California Classic and Las Vegas summer league.

The 6-foot-9 undrafted rookie only mustered three points and two rebounds during the California Classic summer league tournament at Golden 1 Center, but he finished averaging 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds in 16.4 minutes per game in Las Vegas.

Gabriel’s strong summer league finish included seven points, 10 rebounds and a monster dunk against the Warriors on July 13.

The 21-year-old’s status as a two-way player will allow him up to 45 days with the Kings, while the rest of his season will be spent with Sacramento’s G-league affiliate, the Stockton Kings.

Gabriel, who was a highly recruited five-star prospect coming out of high school, will be one of four former Kentucky Wildcats on a Kings’ roster that includes guard De’aaron Fox, forward Skal Labissiere and center Willie Cauley-stein. Rookie forward

SANTA CLARA – Reuben Foster smiled at any mention of football Saturday and otherwise cringed when it came to finally discussing his dramafilled offseason that included two arrests, one of which came with domestic-violence charges that put his career in peril before they were dropped.

“Oh yeah, it was a big learning experience,” Foster said. “I learned from every mistake, everything that was said, all my flaws. I just grew from it.”

That goes for him personally and professionally. He recognizes that the 49ers could have cut ties with him after his Feb. 11 arrest for domestic violence and weapons possession, and he’s thankful they stood by him, albeit with the caveat he avoid future trouble.

“It made me appreciate football a lot better,” Foster said. “It’s crazy knowing football can be gone. But being back on this field with my brothers and coaches, it’s a blessing.”

The NFL has suspended Foster the first two games of the season – Sept. 9 at Minnesota, Sept. 16 vs. Detroit – as a result of his offseason missteps. He called the discipline “painful” but “accepts the consequences.”

Foster, a first-round draft pick last year, fell into trouble this offseason on Jan. 13, when he got arrested in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for second-degree marijauna possession, a charge that got dismissed May 24 upon his completion of a diversion program. San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster spoke with the media after Saturday’s training camp practice, his first comments since an offseason that included two arrests and a dramatic court case in which he was vindicated from domestic-violence charges.
