160TH ANNUAL YUBA-SUTTER FAIR
Chad Daniel, 10, of Loma Rica, takes a break on the grass during the Yuba-sutter Fair on Thursday at the Yuba-sutter Fairgrounds in Yuba City.
While firefighters continue to check for hot spots, the grass fire in the Sutter Buttes is now fully contained, officials said.
The fire, which started just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, burned 1,200 acres, spreading from Pass Road up and around South Butte between Brockman and Moore canyons – between Kellogg and West Butte roads, according to a Sutter County press release.
Four homes were evacuated Tuesday night, and the road block at Pass Road was lifted the next day. An evacuation center was opened at Sutter Union High School on Tuesday night.
The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
The blaze caused minor damage to a communication array on the western peak of South Butte – which includes transmitting and receiving antennas for federal, state, local and law enforcement agencies, as well as some commercial telecommunications equipment – but no homes were damaged and there were no injuries. The fire was never a threat to communities surrounding the Buttes, according to the release.
Firefighters from several surrounding communities responded, along with crews from Calfire, Beale Air Force Base and Sacramento County.
