Gold Sox fall to San Francisco on the road

- Appeal-democrat

The Yuba-sutter Gold Sox tasted defeat for the 10th time in their last 12 games with a 4-3 loss to the San Francisco Seals on Thursday afternoon at the College of Alameda.

It was the Gold Sox’s final game of the summer against the Seals and they finished with a 5-3 edge in the season series. San Francisco is the only team Yuba-sutter will end the year with a winning record against.

Brody Clifford walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Smith in the top of the third to give the Gold Sox a 1-0 lead, but the Seals responded in a big way by scoring their only runs of the ballgame in the bottom half of the inning.

A single and a walk started the rally, and following a strikeout and a flyout, San Francisco went on to score all four of its runs with two down. Two more walks allowed the first run to score before Ryan Meyers connected for a bases-clearing double to give the Seals a 4-1 lead they would hold until the end.

Zachary Promes doubled and scored on an error, and Austin Engelhardt drove in Clifford with a sacrifice fly during a two-run fourth inning for Yuba-sutter, which was held scoreless the rest of the way.

The Gold Sox went on to record just one hit over the final five innings, spoiling solid pitching efforts from Tony Chiodo and Andrew Meister in relief.

Mike Shoenberger went 2 for 4 and Kyle Williams smacked a double as the Gold Sox finished the game with only six hits while striking out 10 times. With the loss, Yuba-sutter fell to 5-20 on the road.

The Gold Sox (15-40) close out the season with a two-game series today and Saturday in Oregon against the playoff-bound Medford Rogues (30-24).
