Maria Garcia is leaving for college, but she left her mark here.

Garcia, 18, of Yuba City created a kiosk and map of the Historic Marysville City Cemetery, located at the entrance, for her Girl Scouts Gold Award project.

“My parents went on a walking tour of the cemetery in early April and they told me about it,” she said. “I got interested and wanted to help figure something out to get people more interested because it’s out of the way off the road. I visited the cemetery and talked to Vickie and her mom and they said that’s something that would be helpful at the cemetery.”

Garcia is a member of the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California Troop 4240 and the Gold Award is the highest level of achievement in the club – equivalent to the Boy Scouts Eagle Scout service project.

“Most of the reason that I have these skills is from being part of the Create Mentoring Program at Sutter

She said some family members also helped with the build as well as some local businesses who chipped in for materials and labor.

Vickie Tudor, who is part of the Historic Marysville City Cemetery and the Friends for the Preservation of Yuba County History, said Garcia’s project is impressive and a great benefit to the cemetery.

“It’s exciting to see it and it shows the community still cares,” Tudor said. “It’s great that she wanted to get involved and leave a mark before she leaves for college.”

Tudor said Garcia created a plan and officials from Marysville signed off on the addition to the cemetery.

“This a big step for her to lean the political process and the folks at the city were impressed with her,” Tudor said. “She drew up some beautiful plans and I think it’s great that the youth are getting involved in the community.” Business hours: Monday-friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Main number ....................
