Championship races hit home stretch

Only two winged 360 sprint car events remain

- By Troy Hennig Marysville Raceway

The season-long point championship battle is coming down to the wire.

Including Saturday night, there are just two more races left. As the temperature continued to rise this past month, so has the intensity on track.

Defending track champion Jeremy Hawes and Chico’s Kenny Allen are two drivers who have had issues in the winged 360 sprint car division. Both have had on track altercations with each other that have led to both getting points taken away.

While they both admit they are ready to put things behind them and move on, one can only imagine what the outcome would be if both are racing for the lead on the final lap of Saturday night’s main event.

This season, Marysville Raceway has entertained a lot of first-time winners. Last Saturday, Brent Bjork led all 25 laps to win his first career winged 360 sprint car main event. Bjork was joyful in victory lane and will return to try to make it two in a row.

Kenny Allen gained 10 championship points on Mike Monahan last weekend. Allen has cut the lead to 17. Hawes sits in the third spot some 47 points back of Monahan. Billy Wallace and rookie sensation Alec Justeson round out the top five.

With consistent finishes, Jaylon Deas is the new points leader in the Crate Sprint Car Division. Deas leads Cameron Haney by two points. Mike Sayre is right there and only six points back of Deas.

If any of these three drivers tie for the championship, the first tie breaker is main event wins. As of now, Deas has one win while Haney and Sayre have zero. Jeff Macedo picked up his second win of the season last weekend. He is 25 points back of Deas and would need a Hail Mary to catch him.

How good has the Hobby Stock division been at Marysville Raceway this season? Really good if you judge the car counts we have been getting.
