Pierce volleyball sweeps Yuba City

East Nicolaus, Colusa also cruise to victories

Pierce High’s volleyball team showed its small-school might by posting a sweep of Yuba City in its season opener in Arbuckle on Tuesday night.

Abby Mendoza and Halle Charter both finished with eight kills to lead the way at the net for the Bears, who won by game scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-23.

Emily Ehrke turned in a strong all-around game with seven kills, 14 assists and seven digs, Sierra Murphy handed out 13 assists and libero Betsy Myers made 11 digs to help the cause for Pierce.

The Bears (1-0) travel to play Woodland on Thursday.

No informatio­n from the match was reported by Yuba City (0-1), which hosts Sutter tonight in its home opener.

East Nicolaus 3, Marysville 0 In Marysville – Jane Menigoz recorded five kills, two aces, a block and an assist, and Natalie Butler added four kills, five assists and two digs to power the Spartans past the Indians in the season opener for both teams.

Riley Grigsby chipped in with 14 digs and a kill to help East Nicolaus sweep the match by game scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-11.

Raina Hudson finished with eight kills, 10 digs and five aces to lead the way for Marysville. Corrine Mathews had 16 assists and Caroline Mathews made nine digs.

The Spartans (1-0) travel to play Winters on Thursday, while the Indians (1-0) travel to play Lincoln that same night.

East Nicolaus also won the junior varsity match, 25-14, 13-25, 15-11. Leila Wininger tallied seven kills, four aces, three digs and two assists, Te’a Mcauliff had five kills, a block and an ace, and Sydnee Schuler had four digs and a kill for the Spartans (1-0).
