Huskies fall to Cardinals’ aerial attack

SANTA ROSA – Travis Tedder’s explosive play on Sutter’s defensive line wasn’t enough to stymie host Cardinal Neman as the Huskies fell 24-0 in their season opener Friday.

It was the first home game for Cardinal Newman since the most destructiv­e fire in California history flattened Santa Rosa neighborho­ods last fall, even burning the homes of several players.

“Getting it done back at home was really nice,” Cardinal Newman quarterbac­k Jackson Pavitt said. “Our offensive line did great, our receivers did great and our team just played well.”

Pavitt went 19 of 26 for 250 yards and three touchdowns. Jake Woods (six catches, 51 yards) caught two of those touchdown passes and intercepte­d Sutter quarterbac­k Cory Mcintyre with seven minutes left to play.

Cardinal Newman hogged possession throughout, especially in the second half, when the Cardinals ran 37 plays to Sutter’s 15.

Chauncey Leberthon also caught a touchdown and Matt Nelson diced the uprights on a 39yard field goal with 5:55 to play in the third quarter
