Yuba College’s volleyball team opened its season with a pair of losses at the Delta Classic at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton on Wednesday.

The 49ers had a tough draw in their first match when they took on host Delta, the state runner-up from last year. The Mustangs ended up sweeping the contest by game scores of 25-8, 25-11 and 25-14.

Sophomore Heather Harness, a Marysville High graduate, finished with a team-high seven kills, and Jasmine Pamma, a freshman from Live Oak, handed out 10 assists in the loss.

Yuba fared a little better in its second match of the day against Cosumnes River College, but the end result was the same as the Hawks came away with the sweep by scores of 25-20, 25-12 and 25-22.

Harness led the way once again with nine kills and Zoe Valero, a freshman from River Valley finished with four. Pamma ended that match with 17 assists and three kills, and sophomore returner Connar Lopez made six digs.

Despite the two losses, Yuba coach Greg Chapman was upbeat. He said it takes a little bit of time for the freshmen and sophomores to mesh together, and he’s confident they will hit their stride quickly before Bay Valley Conference play begins on Sept. 12.

“For our freshman playing against Delta, the speed of the game was an eye-opener,” Chapman said. “We just need to get better and the basic fundamental stuff, but I think we’ll be fine. I see a lot of good stuff in the future.” HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL Colusa 3, Gridley 0 In Colusa – Annie Lay handed out 20 assists and Abby Huskey made 15 digs as the Redhawks cruised past the Bulldogs to remain perfect on the year.
