SAN FRANCISCO – If the Giants had visions of making the final four weeks of the season more entertaining, they became blurred in a 3-1 loss to the firstplace Diamondbacks Wednesday.

Before their offense went silent and their Rookie of the Year candidate battled command issues, the club learned center fielder Steven Duggar would miss the remainder of the season with a dislocated shoulder and labrum tear that will require surgery.

The diagnosis was crushing for a team that’s already shut down three other players – Johnny Cueto, Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey – this month, and it came in before another devastating loss.

“When somebody goes down, it’s always bad,” starter Dereck Rodríguez said. “But he’ll be stronger when he comes back.”

Duggar is expected to be healthy enough to play at the beginning of 2019, but the 2018 Giants must soldier through the final 27 games of the season without him. Though they could have narrowed the gap to 5½ games in the National League West with a series sweep Wednesday, they scored just one run for the second straight night and are now 7 games out of first place.

Unlike Tuesday’s 1-0 walkoff win, the mood in the Giants’ clubhouse following Wednesday’s game wasn’t as rosy.
