Yuba College volleyball drops two in Redding

Yuba College’s volleyball team is still searching for its first win of the season after dropping a pair of matches at the Shasta Tournament in Redding on Friday.

The 49ers faced off against host Shasta College in their first game of the tourney, and although Heather Harness threw down 12 kills, they ended up losing in four sets by game scores of 17-25, 15-25, 25-19 and 28-30.

Cara Shellhorn added 10 kills, and Arrianna Salcido and Jasmine Pamma rounded it out with nine and five, respective­ly. Pamma also had 33 assists in the rough loss that had two game points in the fourth set.

Yuba’s next match against Diablo Valley went back and forth but ultimately ended in a five-set loss for the 49ers by scores of 2515, 19-25, 22-25, 25-13 and 12-15.

Harness led in kills with 11, while Salcido and Zoe Valero both added seven each. Pamma racked up 28 assist and Stella Baty knocked down eight digs, with Valero chipping in with three aces.

Up next for the 49ers (0-4) is a home battle against American River on Wednesday.

River Valley 3, Willows 1 In Yuba City – The Falcons posted two wins at the North State Challenge against Pleasant Valley and Willows at Yuba City High’s Honker Gym.

Alexis Topete had 20 digs, both Belle Bugarin and Samee Taylor added 13 each, and Sarah Hankins and Jaclyn Ruiz had seven each to help River Valley come back to beat Pleasant Valley by game scores of 13-25, 21-25, 25-15, 26-24 and 15-13.

Ruiz threw down 14 kills, Sophia Alley added nine more and Hankins came through with 19 assists.

The Falcons followed up that win with a 23-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-23 victory over Willows thanks in large part to Topete, who made 29 digs.

Taylor and Thya Sengwong both had 10 each, Ruiz added six more, and Mackenzie Van Valkenburg­h and Alley pushed through for seven and four blocks, respective­ly.

It didn’t end there, as Ruiz and Alley led the team with 12 kills while Van Valkenburg­h added three. Hankins, Sengwong and Taylor had 15, 11 and nine assists, respective­ly.

Faith Christian 0 In Vacaville – The Lions dropped their Sacramento Metropolit­an Athletic League opener to the Knights by game scores of 25-8, 25-13 and 25-23.

Jordyn Helms led a spirited effort with five aces, one kill, five assists and two digs, Lilli Elliott added three kills and a pair of aces, and Emme Turn contribute­d two kills and two blocks Faith Christian’s first loss of the season.

The Lions (5-1) look to bounce back next week when they face El Dorado Adventist of Placervill­e.
