CHICO – Dates for candidate forums hosted by the League of Women Voters have been announced, but as of now the closest congressional forum is more than hour away.

Candidates for the California Assembly and state Senate will appear on Sept. 25 in Chico State University’s Harlen Adams Theatre.

Incumbent Assemblyman James Gallagher, R-yuba City, and challenger Sonia Aery have agreed to participate, as well as incumbent Sen. Jim Nielsen, R-red Bluff, and challenger Phillip Kim.

The Assembly forum is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Senate candidates’ appearance at 7:30 p.m. The forums at Chico State University will be co-hosted by the university’s Office of Civic Engagement.

On Oct. 1, candidates for Gridley and Biggs city councils will field questions at the Guardian Building, located at 200 E. Spruce St. in Gridley.

The forums are free and open to the public. They will be filmed live by BCACTV and later shared in their entirety on the League of Women Voters’ website at lwvbuttecounty.org.

The League of Women Voters will be at several upcoming local events to register voters before the November election. For more information, see their website.

Two debates between District 1 Congressman Doug Lamalfa (R-richvale) and challenger Audrey Denney were announced this week. None have been scheduled in Butte County. The League of Women Voters of Butte County invited Lamalfa but his campaign office said he could only commit to dates in Shasta County and Plumas County.

Our latest poll question at www.appealdemocrat. com asks:

High school football participation has dropped nationwide for a second straight year. Do you think the sport is safe for youths? Your choices are:

No. There are too many injury risks, especially for young people.

Yes. Talk of risks and injury impacts have been overblown in recent years.

The game would be much safer with some rule changes (tackling, etc.)

There are so many safer alternatives that I don’t know why people play.

The decision should be left up to each family.

If the kids want to play the sport, then let them play.
