A Live Oak man was arrested after allegedly carjacking a woman Wednesday night – the man using a metal pipe to simulate a gun.

Sutter County sheriff’s deputies responded to the Live Oak Dollar General on Live Oak Boulevard at about 9:45 p.m. after a man allegedly pointed a handgun at a 56-year-old woman’s head in the parking lot, demanding her purse and vehicle – a silver Kia Sportage. He then fled south on Highway 99, Capt. Dan Buttler said.

Deputies split up to cover the main routes that would lead a suspect out of the county, Buttler said, and caught up with Muhammad H. Khalid, 23, while he was traveling west on Butte House Road. A deputy followed him until a second unit with a police dog caught up, Buttler said, and they pulled Khalid over at Larkin and Clark roads.

Khalid would not cooperate with commands, so deputies used non-lethal bean bag rounds to shoot at him, Buttler said. The police dog was not used. Deputies also discovered Khalid had not used a handgun, but a small, metal pipe to simulate having a handgun, Buttler said.

The victim was uninjured and identified Khalid at the sheriff’s office. He was booked into Sutter County Jail on suspicion of driving a car without consent, assault with a deadly weapon not a firearm, robbery, carjacking and criminal threats. Muhammad H. Khalid
