As the prep football season nears its midway point, the scene around the Mid-valley is beginning to take shape.

Each of the area’s 14 team have now established their identities, and while win-loss records do matter early in the year, league play is what counts most in the grand scheme of things and is how playoff berths will be decided.

Tonight, three games in Sutter County take center stage.

In Trowbridge, three-time defending Northern Section Division IV champion East Nicolaus hosts Pierce in a battle between two 3-0 teams and a possible postseason preview should the teams continue their winning ways into November.

At Yuba City, the Honkers begin a new chapter by taking on perennial power Antelope in their first game in the realigned Capital Valley League, which figures to be competitive and come down to the wire.

And in Live Oak, the Lions will host Gridley in the 10th annual Harvest Bowl after the two neighborhood rivals won big last week.

Add to that a big showdown up north between Northern Section powers Sutter and Chico, and a local-vs.-local matchup between Biggs and Maxwell, and there is no shortage of statement games on the docket.

Here’s a quick look at tonight’s Week 4 matchups. Pierce (3-0) at East Nicolaus (3-0) In Trowbridge – A battle of unbeatens will take place at Wahl Field when the Spartans play host to the Bears in a key earlyseason tilt.

Pierce comes into the game following a 35-21 victory over county rival Williams in the 88th Rice Bowl last week, and features

a powerful rushing attack that is averaging 383 yards per game on the ground.

Tommy Davis leads the way with 283 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Ramon Paiz is close behind with 229 yards and three touchdowns of his own. Three other backs have

also rushed for more than 100 yards so far this season.

East Nicolaus, which picked up its most impressive win of the season with a 45-22 victory over Bradshaw Christian a week ago, also features a punishing ground attack and is averaging 389 rushing yards per game.

Quarterback Gavin Mcauliff is the catalyst for the Spartans, rushing for a team-high 400 yards and four touchdowns to go with an additional 219 yards and four TDS through the air. J.T Stinson and Isidro Del Toro have both rushed for 245 yards, with Stinson scoring four times and Del Toro scoring three.

The Spartans have beaten the Bears in each of the past four seasons, including a 30-16 win last year, and have won 33 straight games against Northern Section competition dating back to 2015. Antelope (1-3) at Yuba City (2-2) In Yuba City – After finishing near the top of the Tri-county Conference nearly every year for the past 12 seasons, the Honkers will embark on a new era by welcoming the Titans into Honker Stadium for their CVC opener.

Yuba City completed its run in the TCC with a 41-23 record, including a conference title in 2012. The Honkers finished second to Inderkum five times over that stretch, and will face the Tigers again in conference play on Oct. 19 with both teams moving over to the CVC.

The Honkers trailed 7-6 at halftime and hung tough in a 2812 loss to undefeated Chico last week. Leading the way for offensively for Yuba City is quarterback Bryce Rogers, and running backs Major Niccum, Erik Palmquist and Jariah Mcbath.

Antelope opened the season ranked No. 10 in the Sacramento Bee’s Top 20, but has played a brutal nonleague schedule and comes into tonight on a threegame losing streak with losses to Lincoln, Folsom and Capital Christian. The coach for the Titans is Matt Ray, who guided East Nicolaus to back-to-back Northern Section titles in 2006-07.
