Those who serve in the military, or who have served, might be used to muddy boots, but what about muddy hands? Or, more accurately, clay-covered hands.

Registration is now open for Yuba Sutter Arts’ Ceramics for Veterans program, which is free for active-duty military, veterans and their families.

Starting Oct. 1, classes will be held 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m. every Monday through the end of the month in the Tucker Room at the Veterans Memorial Community Building, 1425 Veterans Memorial Circle, Yuba City. The Tucker Room is on the back side of the building and has its own separate entrance.

At the end of the monthlong session, students will receive their finished kilnfired Participants dip their projects in glaze during the first session of Yuba Sutter Arts’ Ceramics for Veterans program.

bowls and other objects made in class during a pot luck dinner Oct. 29.

Ceramic artist Chris Thompson, who is also an Air Force veteran, will teach students the fundamentals of pottery. Participants will learn the basics of working with clay and hand-building techniques, providing a powerful creative

outlet for veterans, servicemen and women, a press release states.

David Read, executive director of Yuba Sutter Arts, said the ceramics course is part of a 10-month long program, which includes lectures, gallery shows, sales and a fundraiser for local veterans organizations.

“The first series of classes just wrapped up and were a great success by any account,” Read said. “The bowls and other objects created by the veterans were so varied and wonderful, and the joy expressed when each student saw their finished projects was priceless.”

Ceramics for Veterans is funded by Yuba Sutter Arts and the California Arts Councils’s Veterans in the Arts program, according to a press release. The goal of the council’s program is to improve the veterans with art programs.

The program is open to all veterans, active-duty military and their families at no cost. To register, or for additional information, call Read at 749-8065 or email david@yubasutterarts.org.
