Auction, dinner to raise money for local veterans

Standing Tall for Veterans will host the second annual fundraiser dinner and auction in Colusa in mid-october to raise money to serve local veterans.

The Yuba/sutter/ Colusa organizati­on hosts the annual Yuba Sutter Veterans Stand Down, providing veterans with access to support and services, said Jerry Paine, a member of the Standing Tall for Veterans board.

Mike Nichols, president of Standing Tall for Veterans, said the fundraiser was started with the help of Nick Micheli, who said he would help set up the fundraiser if some of the funds went toward services for veterans’ families.

The service he specifical­ly asked for was for when veterans have to go out of town to seek medical attention. Some of the funds help the families find lodging near the hospital the veteran has to go to.

this and we will find out what (the families) need and write a check,” Nichols said.

He added that the organizati­on has helped two families in this manner.

“We don’t want to use the money for frivolous things, we want to use it for peole in the area,” he said.

Standing Tall for Veterans acts as a network to direct veterans to services that help them in whatever situation they may be in. Nichols said veterans in need can come to the office.

According to the Standing Tall for Veterans website, Yuba, Sutter, Colusa and Butte counties are home to over 30,000 veterans.

“We are open to the tri-counties,” Nichols

said. “We are not going to turn veterans away … We want to make sure they take advantage of the benefits (the organizati­on offers). We want to be here as a network center and put them in the hands of people to get them the help they may need.”

The Standing Tall for Veterans’ second annual Fundraiser Dinner and Auction will be held on Oct. 12 at The Showroom at Colusa Casino, 3770 Highway 45, Colusa. No-host cocktails will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner will start at 7 p.m.

The event will have a presentati­on of colors from the Beale Air Force Base and a POW MIA ceremony where shriners from Sacramento will put on a presentati­on. There will also be a live auction, raffle prizes and more.

The auction will have items such as custom-made quilts from local quilters, a trip for two to the San Francisco bay, a guided duck hunt and more.

The raffle will have prizes such as a Chevy Cruze, a Kyco by Arctic Cat ATV, a mountain bike, Kymco Quad Runner and more.

All items were donated by local businesses and individual­s who support local veterans, Paine said.
