Calhome awards $500K to Yuba County for eligible victims of the Cascade Fire
One year after a wildfire tore through the Loma Rica area destroying hundreds of structures and claiming the lives of four people, a state agency awarded Yuba County half a million dollars to assist eligible homeowners who were impacted by the Cascade Fire with low-interest loans.
The funding is designated for disaster rehabilitation assistance, including reconstruction. Yuba County Community Development and Services Director Kevin Mallen applied for the funding in May on behalf of the county and its residents.
Mallen said the Calhome program funding will provide a low-interest loan with a 30-year term and deferred monthly payments to eligible low or very low-income households that were uninsured or underinsured at the time of the wildfire.
“Per the state requirements, eligibility for the funds is limited to use for replacement of owneroccupied homes lost to the Cascade Fire whose household incomes are below 80 percent of the area median income and whose post replacement value of the properties will be below $265,360,” Mallen said.
“The county is definitely appreciative of the funds made available by the state to help victims of the Cascade Fire,” Mallen said.
The 2018 Calhome Program Disaster Assistance funds were awarded by the California Department of Housing and Community Development. It’s just a portion of the $6 million total being awarded by the department to seven counties – Butte, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Nevada, Sonoma and Yuba – heavily impacted by fires last October, which ended up destroying more than 6,470 homes and structures.
The program will be administered by the Yuba County Community Development and Services Agency. For more information about the program, contact the agency at 7495430. Business hours: Monday-friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Main number .................... Steve Miller ......................
