Yuba College women’s soccer hit the field on Friday afternoon to take on the Napa College Storm. After giving up the first goal early, the team settled down and won by a final score of 2-1.

After the Storm scored in the 15th minute, 49ers forward Estrella Silva received a pass from Monica Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was then able to park it in the back of the net in the 40th minute for the 49ers first goal of the match.

Heading into the second half with the scored tied up, Yuba knew they had to shut down any offense the Storm tried to generate.

“I’m really proud of our goalie Agraciela Gomez. She had a wonderful day with two big saves that kept us in the game,” said head coach Rene Villegas.

With less than 10 minutes left in the game left winger Center’s Lorenzo Mcgill hurdles over Marysville’s Javier Zuniga on Friday on Glen E. Harris Field in Marysville.

BERKELEY – Cal reaches the halfway point of its football schedule on Saturday facing this reality: Beat a team that is 0-5 for the first time in 75 years or face the likely prospect of another season without a bowl game. A harsh assessment?

Hardly. The Bears (3-2, 0-2 Pac-12) take on UCLA (0-5, 0-2) at Memorial Stadium in the annual Joe Roth Memorial Game in what figures to be one of only two matchups in which they are favored the rest of the season.

Even with a victory, the Bears must vanquish Oregon State (1-5) on the road a week from now and find another win among five opponents (Washington, Washington State, USC, Stanford, Colorado) with a combined record of 23-6 in order to reach six wins and bowl eligibility.

Certainly the Bears cannot lose to a UCLA team that is 0-5 for the first time since 1943, right?

Not so fast. Even Cal’s coaches say the Bruins look nothing like a winless opponent. After losing three in a row by more than 20 points, first-year coach Chip Kelly’s squad gave No. 7 Washington a scare last week before losing 31-24.

Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin knows it sounds like “coach talk,” but he said flip on the videotape and “you’d be surprised if you said that’s an 0-5 team. It means nothing. They’re leaning toward playing their best football.”

River Valley High’s Rex Baker rushes foryards during Friday’s game against Bella Vista at River Valley High School in Yuba City. River Valley High’s defense tackles Bella Vista’s Jonathan Stewart during Friday’s game at River Valley High School in Yuba City.

With 4:02 left in the second quarter things started to get a little chippy. After a late hit by a River Valley player, a scuffle ensued. Seven ejections later, the teams were back to playing football.

Late in the first half Bella Vista added a touchdown to erase the goose egg after a couple long runs by Jonathon Stewart.

Heading into the half, River Valley led by a score of 58-6. A running clock would be enforced by officials for the second half.

With a lot of substitutions and not that many stoppages, each team scored once more to make the final

score of the contest 65-12.

After the game, Bella Vista decided to refrain from shaking hands to prohibit further altercations. Despite the decision made by the Broncos coaching staff, players from River Valley went out of their way to shake hands with some Broncos players on the way out of the game.

After the game Mcfadden talked about the week ahead for his team.

“We’re going to break down the film as coaches this weekend. We will have a good game plan and a big week ahead of us.”

The Falcons head to Woodcreek next Friday to take on the Timberwolves.
