- Appeal-democrat

It’s the time of year where everyone gets ready to put there best costume forward and decorate for Halloween, but the day itself comes and goes so fast.

Yuba Sutter Arts will host its first local Zombie Walk on Oct. 28 as a “great warm up for Halloween just a few days later,” according to a press release from Yuba Sutter Arts. What is a zombie walk? An organized public gathering of people who dress up in zombie costumes. Participants meet, fine tune their costumes and makeup and then make their way around the community in an orderly fashion. Zombie walks can be organized simply for entertainment or with a purpose, such as setting a world record or promoting a charitable cause.

Originating in North America during the 2000s, zombie walks occur throughout the world, according to the press release.

Yuba Sutter Arts is partnering with Rockabetty’s Hair Parlor of Yuba City to put on the walk.

Yuba Sutter Arts will host the event at its gallery, courtyard and theater at 624/630 E St., Marysville,on Oct. 28 from 1 p.m.- 8 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

530 Rock Hunt, Sugar Sugar, Trinkets & Treasures, Millennium Family Entertainment, Potato Potato loaded tater tots, food vendors and others will be out during the length of the event, according to the release.

Rockabetty’s will have booths showcasing the art of special effects zombie makeup, face painting, card reading and there will be a photo scavenger hunt during the walk.

Twin Cities Dancers will also be on hand in full zombie attire and makeup and will dance to “Thriller” throughout the day, according to the release.

There will be a costume and make-up contest with prizes for the best dressed zombie king, queen, prince and princess, with winners announced at 4 p.m. to then lead the zombie walk through Marysville along D Street and finish at the Burrows Theater, according to the press release.

After the walk, there will be a free screening of George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead,” at 6 p.m., and popcorn will be provided.

A few tips to know leading up to the event are to “ham it up!” Yuba Sutter Arts wants everyone to know people will be wearing fake blood, ripped up clothing and walk around moaning in public, so it will be loud and it will be zombie slow. Zombie’s lurch, crawl, limp and slither, and those participating need to stay in character the entire time.

No conversations between zombies, everybody’s dead.

“Have fun. Come up with a theme and stay in character as much as possible. It’s a celebration of a great time of year,” The press release said. “Moan like you mean it!”
