Marysville runners receive All-league Honors
River Valley freshman football finishes strong
The Indians’ cross country team made the trek up to Collins Lake for the PVL Championship meet where two varsity girls and two varsity boys were awarded honors on Wednesday.
Amanda Angel who placed in eighth (23:27.7) and Aubrey Mcbride in 10th (23:38.9) were the two varsity girls who received PVL All-league honors.
Joey Henry who took fourth (18:21.0) and Cameron Dillon in 10th (18:56.9) were the varsity boys that received the PVL Allleague honors.
Both the varsity girls and boys placed third overall in the team standings for the season.
The varsity teams ran on a 5K course that coach Marcy Tarr said “is a very challenging course with many large hills.”
Varsity girls Stephanie Sanchez (16th, 25:49.3), Sarah Putney (18th 26:15.5) and Johanna Volkening (19th, 26:49.7) rounded out the five top runners.
The other three runners in the top five for varsity boys include Sam Teesdale (16th, 19:33.6), Kyler Ellyson (25th, 20:35.1) and Jonathan Balkowitsch (36th, 21:29.1).
Frosh/soph boys ran on a 2-mile course
where Holden Hicks placed 12th (17:42.1). Yuba City varsity girls make a splash and River Valley saw many personal bests In Roseville – The Honkers varsity girls finished strong in a mostly Sacramento league and with a team that has freshman runners, which isn’t common practice.
Coach Michael Buzbee said the varsity girls took fourth in the Capital Valley Conference on Thursday with Jordan Wilson and Lauren Negrete playing a significant role.
“Their times on the flat and fast 5K course at Maidu Park in Roseville of 20:16 and 20:38 are some of the best around the region,” Buzbee said.
Kylie Leaty (32nd, 23:18), Mia Meyer (41st, 26:45), Cali Martin (53rd, 31:06) and Maren Hammarstrom (55th, 32:07) finished their first year in competitive league.
The Honkers boys ran the same 5K course and placed fifth, but that didn’t discourage the runners.
Austin Holtz (13th, 17:01), Atticus Driver (15th, 17:03), Justin Negrete (23rd, 17:35), Osmar Basaldua (38th, 18:41) and Nathan Michaelis (42nd, 18:49) helped get the team to that place and mostly ran personal bests or close to it.
The frosh/soph boys were paced by Isaias Ademe (64th, 14:33).
The Honkers did not field a frosh/soph girls team.
River Valley runners beat many personal bests in the same championship meet.
The Falcons varsity girls placed fifth overall with Sarah Conine (Holland) leading the team with a time of 21:22.4 in 15th place and earned an All-league Honors.
The varsity boys placed sixth overall with senior Abhayjot Johal leading the team in 31st with a time of 18:12.2.
River Valley frosh/ soph boys placed fifth on the 2-mile course and were led by Travis Prasad-brown (12:39.7), Simranjit Boyal (12:58.9), Daniel Haydon (13:16.6), Joseph Jelavich (13:29) and Kane Schaal (13:37).
The frosh/soph girls placed fourth overall and were led by Simrandeep Kandola (15:44.8), Sukhmanpreet Kandola (16:04.3), Anastasia Casto (16:25.2) and Jade Daniel (16:35.8).
River Valley’s next meet is on Nov. 3 in Angels Camp at Calaveras County Fairgrounds for the Division II Sac-joaquin Subsection.
VOLLEYBALL Colusa 3 , Willows 1 In Willows – Eleven days ago the Colusa Redhawks suffered a gut wrenching defeat at the hands of the Willows Honkers, but in the rubber match between the two teams, the No. 5 seeded Redhawks turned the tables in a stunning upset of the No. 4 Honkers by scores of 25-18, 2624,
12-25, 25-21 to advance to the third round of the NSCIF Division IV playoffs.
In their last meeting, the Redhawks made 14 service errors, however, last night they picked the Honkers’ defense apart and complemented their performance with a solid attack and great defense.
Seniors Gillian Ayala and Jessica Hickel led Colusa with 11 and nine kills respectively, but the play of juniors Hannah Taylor and Carly Lay in the middle was paramount to the Redhawks success.
Taylor finished the match with eight kills and 12 blocks, while Carly Lay added seven kills and eight blocks.
Junior setter Annie Lay was dynamic distributing 32 assists, while Amber Morales put forth a determined effort with a stat line that included 13 digs, six kills and four aces.
Another an important contributor on defense was libero Abby Huskey, who had a team high 18 digs.
Afterward, an excited coach Tina Lyons spoke about the match and the play of her team.
“It was an amazing game,” Lyons said . “Willows came to play, but we were just phenomenal tonight.”
Colusa (36-5) next plays the winner of the match between No. 1 U-prep and No. 9 West Valley on Nov. 1. FOOTBALL Freshman River Valley 34, Antelope 26
In Yuba City – The Falcons finished their freshman season strong, holding off the Titans to win the game on Thursday night.
Coach Bill Rollins said defensive linemen Collin Totman, Jacob Arnold and Josh Colburn played well on defense.
Arnold also had a rushing touchdown in the game. Colusa’s Carly Lay reacts after hitting the match winner in the No. 5 Redhawks’ upset victory over No. 4 Willows in the second round of the NSCIF playoffs. Lay had seven kills and eight blocks in the match.
Derrion Peoples caught an interception and ran it for 20 yards.
Ryan Moore led the offense with 23 carries for 210 yards rushing and got in the endzone four times.
The Falcons finish the season 7-3, 4-1 in the CVC.
Sutter 49, Corning 6 In Sutter – The freshman Huskies add another win to their record in the victory over the Cardinals Thursday night.
Quarterback Trevor Eck had an incredible night both passing and running the ball.
Eck had two passing touchdowns – one to Caden Simmons for 50 yards and the another to Xavier Cardenez for 40 – a rushing TD for 35 yards and a kick return for 52.
Nick Fisher score the first points of the game for the Huskies and Leighton Tarke scored the final touchdown for Sutter from the one-yard line.
D’angelo Acosta gave the D-line a scoring run with a 25 yard interception return.
The Huskies (6-3) head to Orland for their final game of the season.
