An Olivehurst man was arrested after allegedly shooting his neighbor in the chest with a small arrow.

The victim was on her porch in the 4300 block of Twain Drive Thursday morning when Stephenson Harris, 48, began yelling obscenities at her, Yuba County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Leslie Carbah wrote in an email Friday. He allegedly retrieved a mini-crossbow from his house, shot and struck her in the chest. She sustained a small puncture wound and sought medical care on her own after the incident.

When deputies contacted Harris in his fenced-in front yard, he appeared to be intoxicated – staggering and slurring his speech, Carbah said. He was ordered out of the yard but refused and attempted to go back into his home. Deputies entered the yard to detain him when he began to resist arrest and punch at deputies.

One of his pitbull-type dogs attacked one of the deputies when they were able to get Harris out of the front yard to be handcuffed. One of the dogs jumped the fence and came at deputies again. They tried using a taser with no effect, then used their baton to strike the dog and keep it away, Carbah said

Additional deputies and California Highway Patrol officers arrived to eventually restrain the dog, which was impounded by Animal Care Services. The deputies suffered minor injuries from the struggle with Harris and from the dog.

Harris was booked into Yuba County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and obstructing or resisting an officer.
