Yuba offense erupts

After final win at home, 49ers and Deanza to play for Pac-7 crown

Desmond Samples set the example on offense for the Yuba College football team.

Then a group of 49er teammates followed a similar path. That was plan by design by Yuba College head coach Ted Hoal and his assistant coaches going into Saturday’s home finale against Contra Costa’s squad.

The plan worked, which resulted in Yuba College posting a 40-6 win over the visiting Dons. The 49ers finished their 2018 home stand with a 4-1 record.

But Yuba College (4-0 in Pacific-7 and 7-2) have one more league game on the road this upcoming Saturday. The 49ers face Deanza College (4-0 in Pacific-7 and 8-1). The winner of this contest takes the league crown, plus earns an automatic bowl game. The loser takes second place in league, but should still in good shape to earn a bowl game.

Saturday’s game was tied 0-0 until the 9 minute, 42 second mark in the first quarter. That’s when Samples took the snap, faked a handoff to running back Sean Long, found an opening that the 49ers’ offensive linemen created and shaked off two tackles en route to a 24-yard run. Michael Hall’s extra-point kick through the uprights was good for a 7-0 lead.

“Desmond set the tone,” said Hoal of Samples.

Both teams traded offensive possession­s that led to punts, but the 49ers’ next touchdown made their opportunit­y count that increased their lead to 13-0 with
