Much-needed precipitation descended upon the area Wednesday and the National Weather Service in Sacramento is forecasting that it will continue, with periods of heavy rain possible through Saturday.

“In addition to rain, our first significant snow of the season will impact holiday travel with heavy snow possible ...” according to a press release. “The second system moves through late Thursday afternoon into early Friday, bringing additional moderate to heavy rain and mountain snow along with gusty winds.”

Snow is expected to impact travel as low as 6,000 feet.

This afternoon through Friday, the northern Sacramento Valley could see wind gusts as high as 45 miles per hour and 60 miles per hour over the higher Sierras.

All nonessential federal, state and local government offices will be closed today, as well as banks and many businesses.

Yuba-sutter Transit will not operate any services on Thanksgiving and the Sacramento services will not operate on Friday.

The Recology office, buyback and public dumping are closed on Thanksgiving. The garbage and recycling routes will run as normal and Recology asks that customers leave carts out by 5 a.m.
